That's when they were small. I'd like to see a graph of their drive buying numbers per year. I'm sure they could get drives direct now.

Fragmentation isn't an issue in reconstruction as far as I know. Reconstruction is like a rebuild, but worse. It's very hard on the drives. That's why they tell you to make sure you have a backup before you start. I went back and forth on 10GbE. Utimately, I decided to get two NICs and a...

    Proposed NAS build

Yes, but you should basically already have that courtesy of having a backup. Yeah, but there are still ways around that, like putting the two RAID controllers in the same computer and effectively doing the copy local. That's how I did the initial copy from my main server to the backup server.

Thanks to someone at STH I now know how to do it from the GUI. You have to right click on the Drive Group two levels up in the "tree", not the virtual drive. Then you pick Modify Drive Group and go from there. It gave me an estimate of 5 Days 2 Hours 50 Minutes for the operation. I ran a...

Okay, so it looks like the StorCLI migrate command is what I want to use. The PDF manual says: storcli /cx/vx start migrate <type=raidlevel> [option=<add | remove> disk=<e1:s1,e2:s2 ...> ] has this input example: storcli /c0/v3 start migrate type=r5 option=add disk=e5:s2,e5:s3 My problem is...

    Proposed NAS build

So I wanted to try Online Capacity Expansion to see if it really works, how long it takes, how much it degrades the arrays performance, etc. Specifically, going from a 6x6TB RAID-6 to a 8x6TB RAID-6. I see no way to do it in the MegaRAID Storage Manager software (v 15.03.01.00). Based on some...

    Hard drive Failure Rates

They're not buying that many drives. They said they bought 16k drives last year? I can only imaging that Dell, HP, Levovo, etc buy orders of magnitude more drives. I can't imagine that the various HDD makers don't have the capacity to support their volumes. I'm sure they're buying from...

Except the first part says, "...A new, unused item with absolutely no signs of wear..." There are signs of wear. Plus there's no mention of any imperfections in the listing. I could have gotten a refurbished 846E16 chassis for the same price and that has an expander on the backplane.

So my "new other (see details)" Supermicro chassis arrived on Friday (listing). I opened it this afternoon. I discovered it's not new, but a RMA return and some of items shown in the listing are missing, like the front panel breakout cable. I sent a somewhat tersely worded message to the...

I decided to run some benchmarks comparing RAID-10 to RAID-6 since there was some discussion on Hardforum about RAID-10 vs. RAID-6 and which is faster. I used six of the 6TB Toshiba 7200RPM enterprise SATA drives connected to the IBM ServeRAID M5016 controller I'm using. RAID-10: ATTO style...

HSF came yesterday. I got it installed last night. It wasn't quite as tight of a fit as I was expecting around the CPU socket per the dimensions on the website, but there wasn't gobs of clearance either. I put the Asus Xonar DG sound card in the motherboard and made sure it works (ie: plays...

HTPC upgrade? New mobo + CPU + RAM only

madVR is a video renderer that uses pixel shaders running on your GPU to scale video in a very high quality fashion. It has some other neat tricks, like changing the refresh rate of your PC to match the content you're playing, high quality dithering, etc. I use it with MPC-HC.

After looking at it closer I don't think the Norco fan wall will work unless I plan to lose the power supplies, which I don't, because it's wider. I suppose I should wait until I have it in my hands and hear what it sounds like using PWM on the fans before going all hog wild buying things to...

HTPC upgrade? New mobo + CPU + RAM only

I got this swapped over and working yesterday. Windows 8.1 affords me 10bit output and 3D output capability from madVR that Windows 7 can't do. I got everything working x64 style. It was pretty straight forward from the software side. Install Windows 8.1 Pro and drivers for everything...

So I ended up buying a Supermicro chassis on eBay after some back and forth with the seller. The folks on Hardforum talked me into it. They said the new 1200W 80+ gold power supplies are very quiet unlike the older 710/900W ones. I hope they're right. They said the Supermicro chassis are...

question External Keyboard sleep in Windows 10?

So in the process of building my new HTPC I happened to connect the troublesome 5 second sleep keyboard to it. It's an H97 chipset board. It has Windows 8.1 x64 installed on it. The keyboard does the same 5 second timeout on it. However, when it's running Memtest86+ the keyboard stays...

HTPC upgrade? New mobo + CPU + RAM only

So the last piece finally came (yesterday). The CPU & HSF are now installed in the motherboard along with the RAM. I'm running Memtest86+ now. If all goes well hopefully I can Windows 8.1 install and get it swapped into the case tomorrow on my day off.

    10 gig Ethernet

My servers and network rack are all in the basement, so it's less of a problem for me. I ran CAT6 all over my house. Monoprice sold it as 500MHz CAT6. 10GbE is rated for 50m on CAT6 and 100m on CAT6A. CAT6 spec only requires 250MHz. CAT6A requires 500MHz. I'm not sure if the Monoprice wire...

Thanks, I didn't recall that thread. I was doing some reading over there too. At this point I'd be good just connecting my two servers with 10GbE. I'd probably put a dual port card in the new NAS/server so I could also connect it to a switch later like the Mikrotik I linked to earlier, but...

It looks like my options are limited if I want Windows XP x64 (Server 2003 x64) support. I can't find XP x64 / Server 2003 x64 drivers for any Mellanox Connectx-2 card. The Intel x520 cards have Server 2003 x64 drivers. They're not quite as cheap as the Mellanox Connectx-2 and I don't know...

    10 gig Ethernet

What's a "bargain" 40Gb InfiniBand setup cost if I just want to link two PCs together? I'm not sure I can saturate a 10Gb link on the one side plus the one machine still runs XP x64, and I'd rather not have to putting Windows 7 on it so I'd need drivers for XP x64. Additionally, I'd expect...
