    Haswell Build: Thoughts?

The ASRock software seems to work okay in Windows 7 x64 to control the equivalent options in the BIOS.

    Haswell Build: Thoughts?

It seems stable at 4.2gHz at 1.251V VID running the AIDA64 stress test. I'm going to let it run overnight, but so far so good after 2 hours. If it holds up I guess I will try to push it a little further.

Well, there are precious metals in them. Apparently they have a scrap value of $50-100 or so. It's not that uncommon of a crime in the US. With a battery operated Sawzall I bet you could easily cut it out in under a minute from under the car without jacking it up.

So, some nice enterprising individuals decided to cut the catalytic converter out from under my wife's car when she parked it in the lot of a store for a few hours. :cursin:

    Haswell Build: Thoughts?

Well, after getting an updated version of CPU-Z that properly shows the VID of the Haswell CPU I was surprised to find the default settings of the ASRock motherboard were putting >1.25V Vcore to the CPU at 4.3gHz when all I did was change the multiplier in the BIOS and left everything else on...

    Haswell Build: Thoughts?

It won't boot into Windows at 4.5gHz with default voltage (blue screen). I was able to run an hour long stress test at 4.3gHz with default voltage successfully. I really need to get it set up for x264 encoding and read up a little more on what settings to tweak for overclocking before going...

    Haswell Build: Thoughts?

It seems like temps improved ~3-4C after changing to the Indigo Xtreme. Two cores were 46-48C and two were 42-44C. FWIW, the big 140mm TY-140 fan appeared to be running at the same speed as when the system is idle. I've typically bought Gigabyte motherboards in the past (Core 2 days to...

    Haswell Build: Thoughts?

Well I got the Indigo Xtreme TIM installed. It's a little nerve-racking watching the CPU cook basically at Tj (~100C) for several minutes waiting for the TIM to reflow. I followed their Application Note for the Noctua NH-D14 since the Thermalright True Spirit 140 has similar thermal...

    Haswell Build: Thoughts?

I got my Haswell system initially put together yesterday. The ASRock Z87 Extreme 6 is a really nice mobo. I was so impressed with the BIOS, boot time, and features I went to see if the Z77 Extreme 6 was similar to replace the P67 board I have for my i7-2600k. Unfortunately, it's not really...

The case Chewy was looking at first was limited to 160mm. I didn't check the subsequent case. Oh... There aren't many US retailers but I got mine for $40 shipped. There are other good options out there though. Stock it's one of if not the best performing air coolers you can buy. Not sure...

    New non-monster build.

The True Spirit 140 bests the Hyper 212 Evo for another $10, but it's moot with that case since it won't fit. Nice comparison link The 120 seems to outperform the 212 Evo also. link

    Intel vs AMD

The x264 developers say Haswell is ~28% faster clock per clock than SB due to various enhancements. That's not exactly chump change, but I recognize in most use cases the differences are small.

It sort of makes sense though. It makes it compatible with the largest percentage of cables. You can use a dual link cable if you have one. If you have a single link connector you're slightly more limited in the cable you can use.

The Microcenter around here is only a few miles out of way on my drive home from one of the customer facilities I go two several times a week. Additionally, my employer pays for all the premium unleaded gasoline I can use in a month. Sales tax is 6% here, so it all works out well in my favor.

I've been spending a lot of time looking at the rather detailed CPU cooler reviews at Hardware.Info. They've done a lot of great reviews, but this 20 liquid cooling sets group test: better than air? review was fascinating. I didn't expect that many of the closed loop water cooling systems...

Yes, but only if they're not properly designed or excessively used. I'm way past leaving systems on 24/7. Oddly, I'm stuck on cooling. I've looked at a lot of reviews and they don't necessarily agree all that well with one another. They all say the more expensive closed loop water cooling...

It looks like my Q6600 has a Corsair HX520 and the i7-2600K has a Antec Truepower 550 (TP-550). I see from the link Coug provided the HX520 is "unknown". The Antec is okay for Haswell. I'm on the fence whether I should buy another PS. I guess it comes down to whether I keep the Q6600...

Most of my power supplies in use are from Corsair. I need to check exactly what model is where. Some are HX520s, but I think there are a few others ones floating around. I don't think this system needs a big supply. Something like a Seasonic G-450 would probably fit the bill nicely if I need...

Based on some information I found exercising my Google-Fu earlier today it seems they added it mid 2011. You apparently need to have a OROM later than 10.5 and a IRS driver of 10.6.0.1002 or later. It supports HW going back to the ICH9R/DO. Of course motherboard makers probably don't have...

Not as well as Ivy Bridge (which in turn was worse than Sandy Bridge). The integrated voltage regulator doesn't help things. Apparently Intel is still using a crappy tim between the die and the heatspreader instead of solder also. There aren't any, and apparently won't be any.

Based on experience, Microcenter will hold that price indefinitely. I'm not worried about price drops on motherboards. I'm more concerned about getting a buggy board. On a related note, does the Intel RST RAID driver and BIOS support doing things like RAID-1 with drives larger than 2TB yet?
