Well if anyone cares... The 650 GTX I ordered works fantastic. _____p60 video scales to the 2560x1440 resolution of the monitor perfectly while maintaining 60FPS with no hiccups or dropped frames. I can also enabled the better deinterlacing in the LAV video decoder and everything stays smooth.

Ripping and writing Blurays. Goal: reducing your storage footprint.

AnyDVD HD + ClownBD is probably your best bet if you want to keep something that's still a Blu-Ray and have the process be highly automated. This spits out a "movie only" disc with no menu and only the audio tracks and subtitles you choose. There's still no guarantee that a "movie only" disc...

Need more details on what you plan to do with them. So you plan to burn them to BD-R and watch them on a stand alone player? Or watch discs from a HTPC? Are you willing to re-compress them to make them smaller? Do you care about special features or would you be okay with just the movie? Do you...

    4K sector drives

I'm pretty sure only USB drives over 2.2TiB are 4k sector drives due to limitations of the USB interface. I have 2 3TB Seagate USB 3.0 Backup+ drives that have 4k sectors (or at least present themselves to the OS as having 4k sectors).

    "Add features to Windows 8"

It's worked fine for me on more than one system. It's really just Server 2003 with a different name on it. Still gets weekly updates, so I'm not inclined to upgrade any machine running it.

Photo editing software for Windows 7?

Gimp is crap because it pretends to be like Photoshop but it sucks at it. Paint.net is okay because it doesn't pretend to be some giant, wonderful, powerful image editing software. It's reasonably basic, but works well.

So, I decided to overpay for a MSI GTX 650 today. My GeForce 8600 GT can't drive my 2560x1440 monitor adequately for video playback. I can't play back ___p60 video smoothly using VMR (not overlay). The decision to get this card was based on these charts and these charts. I would have bought...

I'm not so sure about that. You have to be quite the trooper to zap yourself with 25kV repeatedly. And, he seems genuinely surprised every time he gets zapped. If it's acting he should be up for an academy award or something.

    Media Center (?) Advice

I should clarify my earlier comment. The PERC 5 and 6 cards don't support drives larger than 2TB. The PERC H7xx and H8xx series cards do. I don't know if they're still firmware locked to only certain drives. The PERC 5 and 6 cards had good appeal because they could be bought cheaply on ebay...

West Coast getting blasted by huge storm fronts. 3 in a row, inside a week.

Look, believe in AGW or don't. It doesn't matter to me, but the whole idea that the AGW pushers have established a non-falsifiable premise for AGW pushes them out of the realm of science and into something else. The scientific method relies on and is built around falsifiable theories. Someone...

    Media Center (?) Advice

IMHO, he should use something with RAID-6 and have a backup (or two) that's equivalently large. The specifics of which I'm a little bit more fuzzy on. Last big array I built was a PERC 6i with 8 2TB drives running RAID-6. The PERC cards (AFAIK) don't support 3TB or larger drives. The new...

    3TB USB HD Format Question

So I used the latest Gparted (0.14.1-6-i486) and had no issues deleting the existing partition, creating a new MS-DOS partition table (not a GPT partition table) and then making a single NTFS partition that took up the entire drive.

    3TB USB HD Format Question

Either my Google-fu is weak or almost no one else is attempting to dig into making MBR partitions >2TB because of the larger than 512byte sectors that you get as a side effect of the USB interface. I've seen a few posts around the web with people asking how to make 'em, but the replies are...

    3TB USB HD Format Question

Does anyone know how the 3TB USB HDs are formatted? I have 2 USB 3.0 Seagates 3TB drives. They show up as a single 3TB partition (base 10). They are not GPT, but MBR partitions. My rough understanding is that is possible because they have 4k sectors, not 512byte sectors they can exceed 2TB...

    Video Card

That depends... Do you want to be able to do all the fancy video post processing (top tier deinterlacing etc)? If so the card lacks the power to process the video after it hardware decodes it. If you're just looking for 1080p (or higher) playback with minimal post processing it should be okay.

Reportedly Emotiva has factory renewed USP-1's available for $299. link It's 2.1 capable (though a little simplistic). You would still need a DAC upstream of it, but there are lots of USB or SPDIF capable DACs. You could couple a FIO D3 to your on board sound card if you wanted to do it...

    Even better audio from a laptop v. Audio-gd NFB-15.1 + Emotiva Pro Airmotiv 4

Well, it's not a 2.1 device. It has no bass management or ability to properly drive a subwoofer. Sure you can split the output and send it to your Airmotiv 4's and your subwoofer, but that's not the right way to do it. Heck, you could do that with your USB sound card.

Well, there's lots of ways to half ass it. ddrueding doesn't seem like someone who wants to half ass things. I'm suggesting the right way to do it. Do you have any free slots in your PC for an actual sound card or do you want something USB or what? Are you just looking to play music or do...

Please... There are lots of quality subwoofers from non-boutique / audiosnobbery brands that easily meet that criteria. They just happen to give you a lot more value for your dollar.
  37. S

    Video Card

Err... it looks like I spoke too soon. The GDDR5 GT 640 is the GTX 650, not to be confused with the GTX 650 Ti, which is not a GK107, but a GK106 (GT660 chip).
  38. S

    Video Card

You also can't overlook that Nvidia gimping all the GT 640 cards with DDR3 instead of GDDR5. The GT 440 was available both ways. I'm pretty sure mine has GDDR5.

    Even better audio from a laptop v. Audio-gd NFB-15.1 + Emotiva Pro Airmotiv 4

By really good you mean subwoofers with performance that ranges anywhere from ho-hum to poor from long established boutique audio brands that cost an arm and a leg? Something akin to buying a genuine IBM desktop for $15k when the equivalent clone was $2500. Except for this analogy to line up...

    Video Card

I should point out that supposedly the 6x0 series cards have the VP5 (per Wikipedia). However, it seems some of them are rebadged cards from previous generations (the 630 is the 440 and the 610 is the 520). The 620 is a Fermi card also. That likely means only 640 is Kepler based with the VP5...
  42. S

    Video Card

The 520 has a more advanced hardware decoder, but the 440 has better post processing capabilities. I'm not sure where the 620/630/640 fit. I know they have the VP5 engine that's in the 520, but I don't know if they have the post processing muscle of the 440.

    Even better audio from a laptop v. Audio-gd NFB-15.1 + Emotiva Pro Airmotiv 4

You can get something for a lot less than that. Amazon had the Onkyo 809 as low as $427 last week. The price has been slowly climbing since. You could get a USB dac / pre-amp like the Audio-gd unit I bought and use a small DSP after that like the MiniDSP with the 2.1 plugin.

    Even better audio from a laptop v. Audio-gd NFB-15.1 + Emotiva Pro Airmotiv 4

IMHO, he needs proper bass management. That means a crossover and variable delays (distance settings). His current sound card doesn't offer that. Even a sub with a pass through / quasi crossover isn't really going to do it right no to mention that will severely restrict his subwoofer choices...

SSDs - State of the Product?

I'm okay with some refurb products, but an SSD (or anything else with a finite lifespan) wouldn't be one of them. Yes, but that's about as cheap as they get not withstanding a few Emotiva products that I can't recommend based on their history of releasing pre-pros with quirky implementations, bugs, and fundamentally flawed "features". There is a cheaper unit from Outlaw, but I have no idea if it's worth...

    Even better audio from a laptop v. Audio-gd NFB-15.1 + Emotiva Pro Airmotiv 4

I'd probably suggest adding a receiver or pre-pro with pre-amp outputs. You can use the SPDIF output from your USB sound card to feed it.
  48. S

    Video Card

    Yeah, something like that.
  49. S

    Even better audio from a laptop v. Audio-gd NFB-15.1 + Emotiva Pro Airmotiv 4

As long as your sound card has a subwoofer output it's fine. The next step up is a receiver or pre-pro. You would want to use SPDIF or HDMI from your PC to the receiver/pre-pro and then take the pre-amp outputs from that to the subwoofer and Airmotiv 4's.
