What type of WD BB HDD drive do I have?

I'm pretty sure the original ones had 20gb platters (I had one for a short while) but maybe they've upgraded to 40gb platters meanwhile? I think Mickey on SR would be your best bet

    Drive Recovery

As others said, don't try to open the sealed platter enclosure, if its not spinning up then either the motor is dead (tough luck) or the circuitry. The latter can be replaced easily enough. If you swap circuit boards, AFAIK as long as the model is correct, the capacity needn't be the same as...

    In memory of Tiger(June 1987 - October 3, 2002)

My condolances. This is why I don't like pets - they can be such good friends but almost certainly will not outlast you... and then what happens? Makes me wonder how much longer our two cats back at home have left, and and how bad it will be when that time comes. :(

Building extra PC, looking for help on a couple components

My housemate has the TUV4X, it never created any problems as far as I know of. It would certainly be better, as advised by others also, to spend the extra $5 for the Radeon card.

And I thought the potholes were bad where I live...

You know, it never occured to me that perhaps the car reversed into the pool... I just assumed since it was pointing towards the right then it must have come in from the left...

[Short Review] - Blue Mouse and Navigator keyboard

Nice review, Doug. Last time I tried an optical mouse, it was some cheap Logitech version. Didn't like it at all. Perhaps because I've been using the MS Intellimouse for about 4-5 years now and the shape and feel I've gotten used to over the years. I have 4 spare ones here, just in case. Till...

Darn. It doesn't support my DSL modem. (D-Link DSL200). And on my main machine it won't support the sound card, possibly NIC and graphics. Too bad. Was nice though, easy to use though pretty sluggish on the P3-733/256mb I tested it on.

    Lycoris

I installed it on my second machine, for some reason doesnt want to run my i815 based graphics at 32bit colour (displays lots of random colour lines vertically across the screen), but works fine at 16 bit. No biggie, but the real problem was that I couldnt get it to connect to the net via my...

Any info on a Sony Minidisk unit

I just got a brand new Sony MDS-SP25 Minidisk unit for £10 (<$20)! However, this is intended to be connected to a Sony component system and therefore has a ribbon cable connector for the power, in and out connections (though it does have optical for this also). This is why they are selling...

    Unreal Touranament 2003

Real players are usually tougher then the bots - on UT '99 I could just about (50% chance) beat the bots on Masterful mode on maps that I knew well, but on online games not a chance... didnt even win (or get close) once. But then I've only been playing for 6 months on and off.

    Barracuda 5 SATA review

Well WD says the JB series will only have 3 years warranty and thats fine with me as theyre only a few bucks more than the normal versions, and I was intending to get JBs anyway. Maxtor says the top of the line ones will have a 3 year warranty, and unless theyre intending to release several...

. I had that problem too - fixed by updating DirectX from 8.0 to 8.1 I like the graphics, even on my old GF2MX, and to imagine what it would play like on a top of the range card with the hi res textures present on the retail version.... whoaa!! I'm in for a game, just ICQ me Clocker or...

Is this Dell worth the money?

I dont know why, but although this is of little significance, the only drives I've had that really had a nice sounding tray mechanism were teh TEAC CD532E and the Asus CD500S. My Plextor PX40 also sounded cheap. What do I mean by nice sounding? I don't know. Just a low pitched noise and a...

Is this Dell worth the money?

I got the pioneer DVD 117 a couple of days ago - haven't really tested it much but I dont really like its tray mechanism - it sounds cheap and flimsy, and on the inward motion it accelerates suddenly towards the end of its path and slams shut. But otherwise seems fine. I was intending on a...

Put double layers of Akasa Paxmate insulation (lame name), replaced the front fans with quieter LED ones at 5v, and almost got rid of the noisy D740X - I say almost because by mistake I ordered a WD800BB rather than JB so thats going back and hopefully tommorow I'll have a JB. I tried the...
