Photo editing software for Windows 7?

Depends on what you want to do, but in general when people want to avoid Adobe they go to the GIMP. GIMP

Mysteriously there was an additional update this morning, and after installing it the upgrade worked. Weird.

Nope. Too many other things going, I'll revisit the issue when I can get a couple proper nights of sleep.

    "Add features to Windows 8"

So other than cheaper ways to do what I want to do...any suggestions to fix the issue? I have copies of 8 Pro sitting here but I don't want to reinstall windows. This machine is new and has all the drivers in there already.

    "Add features to Windows 8"

I purchased some Lenovo desktops that ship with a basic version of Win8 that can't join domains. No prob, in the properties menu is a link called "Add Features in Windows 8" where something called the "Pro Pack" costs $70. I gave them the credit card info and it started doing it's thing. Then it...

    question Which Tablets

As far as I know, this is the first tablet that runs a real copy of Windows 8 and has enough horsepower to replace your laptop. I'm pretty stoked to get the "Pro" version with an i7 CPU. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2413967,00.asp

    Remote Control Aircraft

I'm not so worried about the Chinese aircraft, they aren't likely to arrest me for thought crimes, etc. Those would be the American drones.

    Remote Control Aircraft

Took the plane to work to try it in some more open spaces. Worked great until it didn't. Did a quick wing-over to set up for a high-speed pass overhead. In the dive the wings got loose and I lost control. Straight into the ground, dug a 4" hole, and the wing spar tore out the fuselage...

    Remote Control Aircraft

Actually, a number of years ago (but after 9/11) a guy was flying fpv around the Brooklyn Bridge. The police did stop by, but just watched for a while and left.

    Media Center (?) Advice

I won't be able to get to everything now, the wife is calling me to bed, but here is a start: a) I use the DS1812+ at home and work, but have also used the DS1512+ and DS713+. The software, interface, and management are exactly the same. b) No idea, it takes care of it and offers 1 drive of...

West Coast getting blasted by huge storm fronts. 3 in a row, inside a week.

If we are still in the area when we build our next house, the location I've picked out is at 650', and still 12 miles from the ocean (decent view).

    Remote Control Aircraft

One step at a time, but my current goal is something like this: http://flitetest.com/articles/x_19_scratch_build The ability to do a controlled hover and still cover significant distance at a good speed sounds perfect. And the geek factor is way out there.

    Remote Control Aircraft

Got the Radian in the air today, I really suck. Even after some practice on a simulator with my controller, I was having a hard time while it was coming towards me (right/left reversed). I'd made a mistake when I ordered the video transmitter/receiver. Even though they are both 5.8GHz they are...

    Windows 8

When Vista was out I went through the hassle of formatting and installing XP on every machine. That was a pain. With 7 I was able to just give the users the machine as-is. With 8 I'll be putting the first one into production with Start8 tomorrow; I've already purchased 25-user license to get...

    Media Center (?) Advice

The Synology boxes handle their RAID automatically, so you can stop worrying about that part now. It will only support one lost drive at a time, but the odds of losing a second before the first is rebuilt in arrays of 8 drives or less is pretty low. Besides, that is what the backups are for...

    Media Center (?) Advice

I went from what Tannin advised to the following. Synology boxes at home and office that replicate via vpn every night. My home computer is connected to the home theater via hdmi. The connection at work is still being worked out. It is simple, reliable, and redundant. Just not cheap.

West Coast getting blasted by huge storm fronts. 3 in a row, inside a week.

And considering that things are happening now (sea level rise, record droughts, record storms, record frequency of storms), focusing on them individually makes more sense anyway. We're past the theoretical "bad things might happen" and into the "how will this affect me" stage. That I believe...

    Media Center (?) Advice

The Synology would be a great path for someone less knowledgeable on the hardware side. The modular software and web interface are great and it supports drives of at least 4TB. The main decision for him would be how big a Synology station and what capacity of drive. My 8 x 4TB array leaves me...
