I had (have) many versions of DI, and I know the last few were bad, just don't remember all the details. I've been using Terbyte Unlimited's Image for Dos and have been very happy with it. Never tried to clone a HDD with it, though (not even sure if it can).

That's because Symantec buggered it. It was pretty good while PowerQuest was releasing it. I bought the first version released by Symantec; one release was enough for them to work their magic on it.

I vaguely remember reading that if Win 7 sees more than one HDD during install, it will write some critical data to HDDs other than the boot drive, creating boot problems if those other drives are removed. Suggestion was to disconnect all other drives, install Win 7 and then reconnect the other...

It's this disease to keep changing things. Perfectly good websites end up getting screwed up because "they've been the same way too long".

Some of the free partition manglers don't align partitions. I used a free one recently and had helluva problem unborking the whole thing. Partition Magic always worked correctly, but the last version released (8.3 or something like that) barfs on 1 TB drives.

The bed will help somewhat, but not as much as you think, because it's surface area is horizontal. Anything hanging vertically will help a lot more - curtains, or those panels you linked to.
