    Overclocking Fun

Just realized I forgot to disable the turbo-boost, so it is going to 5.1Ghz for single-threaded stuff. Never had a 5Ghz+ machine before...

    Overclocking Fun

I was thinking about that, but I really like having 24GB of RAM, and the added throughput is nice as well. 4.8Ghz might be as quick as I can go.

    Overclocking Fun

It isn't exceptionally multithreaded, so clock speed it pretty much it. Now stable @ 4.8; I don't think any of the other chips can do better on air.

    Overclocking Fun

So it turns out that my new favorite game, Mechwarrior Online, is massively CPU bound. The video cards I throw at it make no difference, but a little overclock is directly visible in the framerate. Currently working on my "office" machine (990X) and now have it up to 4.6Ghz. Does anyone have...

    Unbelievable Cisco server deal

Seconded. When I have to work on one in my office I will go to great lengths to minimize runtime. This was the primary motivation for out of band control.

Setting up a VPN channel inside a FreeBSD jail

I can't comment on the FreeBSD stuff, but if redundancy is really important, you'll want at least two different forms of internet connection at your end and a VPN link that can hop between them. For this kind of thing I use FatPipe equipment at either end; capable of redundancy and load...

Personal Music Players - I need to scratch an itch

That is possible. The only thing I can think of to help would be to manage "lockers" for people; a folder that stores their music and their playlists. If they use iTunes to purchase stuff it should sync there, same with Amazon or whatever. If it came from physical media, you should probably keep...

It is possible to have the same account signed in from multiple locations editing the same doc, but you may be prompted to re-sign-in more frequently. You could simply invite them using their credentials, or create accounts for them.

    Folding@Home

Thanks. And that was a typo...they are GTX690s (basically a pair of 680s each) so two cards is 4 GPUs. I don't think I'm into this enough to drop another $1k just for folding...

    iPhone syndrome

We're actually playing "pick your own IT" with our new cell phones. You can pick, and pay a premium out of pocket if you want to upgrade. That will be (at least in the short term) a time sink.

There are ways to sell back electricity to the grid and at least break even. This is the way most solar systems (including the one I envisioned for us) would work. Of course, in case of emergency that shuts down power, having a local store would be nice. I'm just not sure whether it is worth the...

Fair enough, I'll believe you on that. The only hardware I've tested it on was a fanless Atom rig with an SSD and 2GB of RAM and it was impressive if I wasn't trying to play full HD video. Is the boot time really that much better?
