I'm pretty sure Sony Pictures loses several billion a year in revenue due to torrents etc. That doesn't mean other Sony divisions don't produce products that work well over the Internet (PSP-PS3 global media sharing etc).

It can effect performance when running at high rez with high AA settings. Shouldn't affect DVD playback.

Users who cared about performance already knew the card was crippled by using a lot of slow ddr2 when the rest used gddr3 that was over twice as fast. Those that didn't got a warm fuzzy from having "2GB".

Yes, for a value minded consumer I wouldn't recommend the 955 or the i7 platform. The X3 and the "slower" X4s are much more bang for buck.

I have the same problem, a socket 939 mobo with a 3200 single core in it. Hell it's still got AGP. Doesn't seem worth hunting down a faster 939 processor, hard to find them.

You are suggesting that this card is running PC2 -12800, which doesn't exist. PC3-12800 does, that is DDR3.

Because the DDR2 iis 400MHz * 2 transfers per cycle = 800 megatransfers per sec. The GDDR3 is 800MHz * 2 transfers per cycle = 1600 megatransfers per second. The GDDR5 IS 800MHz * 4 transfers per cycle = 3200 megatransfers per second

256bit DDR3 @ 800MHz is the same speed as 128 bit GDDR5 @ 800MHz. 256 bit DDR2 has half the bandwidth.

Your math is wrong (as is mine). Its 400 MHz (800 effective). The card is using the equivalent of quad channel ddr2 - 25.6 thanks sbardwick.

Look at the numbers for the GeForce 9400GT 128 bit @ 400MHz = 12.8 GB/sec. Oops so 25.6 GB/sec for 256 bit ddr2. You can get to 57.6 GB/sec but it takes GDDR3 @ 900 MHz with a 256 bit bus.

Once you do get an HDTV it will reveal the limitations of SD sources. Until then, enjoy.

Greg, if you do swap then you want to look at the 4770 which uses about 50W. It shares the same UVD 2 and HDMI audio output capabilities as the 4850 (the article was done before the 4770 was released).

If you look at their reviews of the nvidia 295 they have no probs recommending it as the fastest video card they have ever tested. Xbitlabs has some more thorough tests. Going from 512MB to 1GB is often worth the cost. From 1GB to 2GB is more a product for the mac crowd (no offense).

I apologise for sounding like some ATI zealot, but the results show the $100 4830 outperforming the $140 9800GT OC at the resolution you are playing at (1600 and above). The 9800 is itself significantly faster than the 9600.

Your linked article seems to indicate that ATI cards using AGP or 1x PCI-E slots have some issues (bandwidth limitations). Seems irrelevant given Greg will be using an x16 slot. I'll take UVD2 over some niche CUDA hype from nv.
