    Netbook for the wife

Yes that looks compelling. I take it I will need to get two 2GB SO-DIMMS to upgrade to 4GB? And the Intel 4500 graphics is enough to decode HD video?

SAS: CARDS, ETC. WORTH THE MONEY?

IMHO if you are looking to buy into SAS now, then wait for the 6Gb controllers and drives to come out. Right now is the end of the SAS 1.0 generation. Given your proven history of bleeding edge storage technology, I don't want you to have buyers remorse.

SAS: CARDS, ETC. WORTH THE MONEY?

SAS has replaced parallel SCSI in the enterprise. New servers use SA-SCSI controllers and backplanes. My experience with the IBM lines seem to indicate no significant problems. The majority of enterprise class drives are now using either Fiber Channel or SAS. Here's a review of a bunch of SAS...

    Netbook for the wife

I was initially looking at netbooks as first laptops for the kids. However, given that I can live without 8 hour battery life, the Core Solos/"Celeron 900" based laptops seem to be only $50-$100 more with significantly more potential (though of course not in the same class as a full Core2Duo etc).

Phone thread: What phones are you using, and with what plans?

Screw Windows Mobile. I don't have the patience for them to finally release ver 7.0 next year. BB, Palm, Android, there's plenty of options that aren't built on years of Windows CE.

I do want to buy a used car

I've been driving the RS6 quite a bit in Gran Turismo on the PSP. I have to say, this is a sweet handling vehicle. Any course with some dirt or snow/ice, and it's a dream to handle. Not too shabby on Suzuka either. Feels better than the Nissan GT-R.

    Something Random

Seems like a glowing endorsement of the 295 there :) Given I'm only at 1920*1200 I'm thinking of the 5850. By keeping all the raster backends it provides just as much AA/AF power as the 5870. I take it this will be running on the 30" at 2560*1600?

    HannsG 28" monitor...

The 22" rotated to portrait should line up pretty well with the 28" for dual screen actilon. That's just what the cable co wants you to think. The signal is more all or nothing now. ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox and PBS all broadcast in HD OTA. Antennaweb may help you with your specific address.

22" to 24"? You'll get used to that in a few minutes. I would tend to the 28" for bang for buck provided it doesn't have serious issues. Doesn't sound like you are doing critical work on it.

    HannsG 28" monitor...

Nah, the tuner is for OTA HD signals, you can receive via bunny ears (no monthly payments). From what I recall you don't have an HD signal in your house, this would be a cost effective way of enjoying HDTV.

    problem Good summer hiking/backpacking boots

I'm not sure what kind of duration your hike is, but I would recommend the following: Have two compasses (one is backup). Know how to use them and a map to navigate. The start of a multiday hike is not the time. An iphone with 5 or 6 battery hours or even a normal GPS as a sole source for a...

SSDs - State of the Product?

But who is the FUD directed at? AFAIK there are no "majors" using SATA "E" IBM drives in enterprise products. And the people throwing in a few drives for a build your own server aren't looking for an enterprise class solution. When we see an E series drive with a SAS connector we could take it...

SSDs - State of the Product?

For a standard array of drives with RAID 5 or 6, the X or E series seems OK. For something mission critical on a SAN? Well it's best not to roll your own in that environment. Just look at some of the firmware issues. Remember flash is a solid state device with a finite life, certain apps need...

Didn't you buy a 4870 X2? I believe it's $300 for the 5570 and $400 for the 5870. It's basically doubled the performance of the 4870. The nice thing is there will be lower priced parts to replace the 4770/4650 series class in the mainstream/value segments. We'll have to see what some real DX...
