    Cellular Internet Service

I believe tethering to laptop is an extra $10 per month for Verizon plans. Hard to beat their coverage. They cap you at a monthly 5GB on the data plans. If you don't feel the urge to watch TV on your phone it should be fine.

Seagate releases Cheetah NS 10K SCSI drives

Until the 15K drives hit the 300G mark, 3.5" will be around for a while. 2.5" is fine for higher spindle counts but still doesn't have the capacity available from 3.5" form factors.

    Train Travel

I believe it takes about 7.5 hours to take the train to Niagara from NYC. They do have the Maple Leaf service which takes you to Toronto. Quite comparable to car if you are taking it easy. A friend of mine took the bus from NYC to Rochester, that took about 7 hours.

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

04 Hyundai Elantra, manual. Around 430 miles per tank, ~12 gallons. Should C.A.F.E standards increase over time, as engineering efficiencies also improve, and new tech comes online? Sure. Should they change at such a rate as to cause auto companies to stop designing new cars/trucks because...

    42" HDTV recomendations?

The problem I find is that the ~18Mbit/sec max for an HD channel in the USA is insufficient for fast moving scenes. Lightning/disco scenes etc, they can breakup easily. Not sure what specs the Aussie HD standard has, I'm assuming they went with what the Europeans chose? Got to go to HD-DVD or...

    Request advice: network storage

Robust backup and hard drives don't make sense to me. If don't have a copy of your media off-site, then you are vulnerable to fire/theft/human error deletions etc. Apparently the on-line services aren't too bad, if your net connection is up to the task. Can't beat tape for offsite, if you can...

One thing that you may or may not care about is if the receiver can playback/decode multi-channel audio via HDMI, or whether it only switches the video/audio. This would be especially relevant if you have a PS 3 or other HD playback device that only outputs multi-channel HD audio via HDMI.

    Personal Dilemma

Well it would never be passed into law in the USA, but I can't see the harm in protecting Aussie workers entitlements, when the employers are trying to take that away from them. 4 weeks of vacation really isn't much. It's simply setting minimum standards (just like the minimum wage in the USA)...

    Personal Dilemma

It encourages employee retention. It makes sense to reward those who are loyal to the company. Plus once you are accruing say 30 days of vac per year, it's not very tempting to take another job that may only offer 10 or 15. You are coming from the contractor point of view, where benefits are...

    TV question

I have the Samsung 451, it also works with unencrypted QAM. However, navigating to a sub channel is laborious at best. It has DVI (with HDCP) output, so you can hook it up that way (use an HDMI->DVI cable if needed). It also has S-vid/composite if needed for an older TV.
  34. Pradeep

    Personal Dilemma

There isn't a solid piece of legislation like the FLSA in Australia. There is a minimum weekly wage which must be paid, it is indexed each year or so. Last I remember Aussie workers were guaranteed 6 weeks vacation per year, but I dunno if that has changed. Given that many US companies start...

Whilst they make take up to 2000W, you will notice that they are all extremely efficient designs. I.e it doesn't take much power at all to get extremely high volumes. MINIMALIST Video out computer for playing stuff on TV Surround sound system

MINIMALIST Video out computer for playing stuff on TV Surround sound system

Depending on your TV Greg, if it has component input (the three RCA connectors usually colored red, green and blue), use the component output on the 850XT (I'm assuming there is one via a dongle output). This will give you the best image quality possible. Alternatively, S-Video would be your...

CPU UPGRADE FOR GIGABYTE GA-K8N PRO-SLI

Honestly Greg I have no idea what those numbers mean. You may want to look at some reviews from anandtech.com or elsewhere. The newest video cards do excel in very high resolutions and/or heavy anti-aliasing. The 320MB card is fine, as long as you aren't going to run it at very high resolutions.

MINIMALIST Video out computer for playing stuff on TV Surround sound system

I've found that the onboard toslink optical output works fine for surround sound use. For HD capability you would generally need either an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray drive, and a protected HDMI display chain. VGA output also allows HD output.
