I believe tethering to laptop is an extra $10 per month for Verizon plans. Hard to beat their coverage. They cap you at a monthly 5GB on the data plans. If you don't feel the urge to watch TV on your phone it should be fine.

I believe it takes about 7.5 hours to take the train to Niagara from NYC. They do have the Maple Leaf service which takes you to Toronto. Quite comparable to car if you are taking it easy. A friend of mine took the bus from NYC to Rochester, that took about 7 hours.

Yeah, that sharing a license thing is confusing, because I can't see how you can deregister your existing activation code before transferring it to someone else.

I've used their licensing portal recently, bit of a pain waiting 24 hours for the activation codes, if it's critical have to call them direct and demand it from them.

One thing that you may or may not care about is if the receiver can playback/decode multi-channel audio via HDMI, or whether it only switches the video/audio. This would be especially relevant if you have a PS 3 or other HD playback device that only outputs multi-channel HD audio via HDMI.
