Intel proposes new interface for Flash devices

I picked up a couple of 21" trinitron CRT screens a few weeks back. What I had forgotten since going flat panel is the absolutely tossload of space they take, depth wise. Might have to pony up for a 19" flat panel, seems worth it for the extra space it gives you.

    MP3 Player (what to buy)?

Thanks Fushigi. Ended up going with a 1GB Sansa c240. About $46, has the FM tuner and voice recording. Single AAA battery. Certainly hard to beat value wise when compared to the products with the "Apple tax" on it. Of course now the youngest is jealous and wants one as well :)

    OCR forms -> Conditional formatting?

http://www.irislink.com/c2-532-189/OCR-Software---Product-list.aspx or more likely something like this: http://www.abbyy.com/flexicapture/?param=132539 You would need to define the fileds you want for each unique form type, no matter what software you use.

    MP3 Player (what to buy)?

Looking at a SanDisk Sansa c150 2 GB MP3 Player for my son's 10th. It mentions it's PlaysForSure compatible. Does it still allow dragging and dropping of mp3s via Explorer?

    Cool ('green') Car

Oh, I forgot to mention, the motors reach 80HP at 12000rpm. And the car it beat was a Porsche Turbo. http://www.drive.com.au/Editorial/ArticleDetail.aspx?ArticleID=8754&vf=23

    Cool ('green') Car

Nice. The xB got a big bump in power with the new engine, should have snappy performance. I was watching a documentary on HDNet last night, a Japanese uni professor was designing a high performance electric car, without any collaboration with existing Japanese auto makers. It's got 8 wheels...

    Multiple monitors and SLI

I don't know of any RAID cards that need more than an 8x slot. Chances are one of those 16x slots is 8x electrically anyway? Edited to add: If you look at the third image, looks like one of the 16x slots is only 1x electrical. WTF is up with that?

Should There be a Ban on Incandescent Lamps?

The man-trap at one of our colo datacenters has a CFL for illumination. Unfortunate when you are the first one in after a while (it has a motion activated switch), because it is so dim that it is almost impossible to see the keypad to enter a pin. In certain applications you still need instant...

    Something Random

From the stories I've seen, the Ford Escape Hybrid has been a big success for its drivers in NYC taxi use. The stop and go is perfect to maximise regen braking. They did have to get special approval as it is no where near roomy when compared to a Crown Vic. You could see the looks on the other...

Sure. But given I can fill up every night when the car is garaged (with both natural gas and electric), there's no reason to let the natural gas tank drop low enough to get stranded. The longest drive I do is perhaps 300 miles, and that's a very rare trip. For my commute to work, I only need 70...

Looks like the price of the iphone has been dropped to $399 for the 8GB, and the dropping of the 4GB altogether. What a depreciation after just a couple of months, it's like back in the days of the Pentium 60/66. Milking the upper crust tit.

Nikon D3 and D300 announced: What impresses me is the 922K pixel 3" screen, and the carbon-fibre shutter. Looks like it has a stinking fast processing chip as well. Dual compact flash for RAID 1 like capability might be useful for the truly critical moments...

    Office floods

For water detection in our machine rooms we use two wire cable that is layed out in regions. Even the tiniest drop of condensation will set the alarm off. Then it's off with the floor tiles to see what's going on. Most common water problem is when an A/C unit condensate pump fails.

Another Digital Camera Thread - Point and Shoot

5 fps, not bad at all. Interesting to see the auto sensor clean functionality, as well as the option to have the mirror locked up for more than one shot. I know for some applications it would be best to have the mirror constantly locked up. One less moving part to fail. 16 to 21 in itself is...

    dSLR sensor cleaner

Well these cameras were very rarely without their lens on. What's impressive is the price of the new quad core Xeons. Even the most expensive model at 3.13 GHz is less than the price of the 5160 dual core @ 3 GHz. I thought 1333 FSB would matter for the quads but it looks like it only delivers a few percentage points of performance.

They should have 6x single layer and 4x double layer burn speeds in the 3rd quarter for BluRay. Once they can increase the laser power, we should see even faster speeds. Lot more storage than DVD. But I wouldn't trust it for critical archiving just yet.

    Why C.A.F.E Standards are Dumb

One of the things I've noticed in the USA, as opposed to Australia/Europe, is that people tow massive things behind their trucks/SUVs. Boats, 5th wheel trailers, car trailers etc. Obviously not all SUVs are used to tow. But there are certain things that a car cannot do.
