Maybe... :rambo::drunk::king::) Wait 'til I get my second one And the 2600K isn't all that expensive. I think I paid $340 or so for the Q9550s when I got them (and the 2600K cost $370), so all in all, a worthwhile upgrade

Sandforce + Sandy Bridge = WTF?

Given that the SSD works in other PC's, and the troubleshooting you've done, I'd suspect that Gigabyte motherboard. I'd opt for replacing the motherboard.

At the rate you're catching me, I need to hurry. Actually, I wanted to wait for AMDs bulldozer due ~ 20 June. I think that the 4-module/8 integer core models will be folding monsters, but you aren't giving me time to wait.

Packet fragmentation? different frame sizes? Have you updated the drivers on the Windows box? See if the Realtek site has a later version than on the Gigabyte site. On the Linux side for CIFS, see if Asynchronous I/O is enabled or disabled. Whatever it is, toggle it and retest? Some...

Or lead mining. Oil & gas—Deepwater Horizon, Piper Alpha anyone? The trouble as I see it is that too many people just look at the simplistic setup costs for any resource use. But in this country at least (which is why I mentioned lead), the people are demanding more stringent safeguards on...

That's an interesting link, but it's a little light on in details. The pdf states things like safe to 1600 (C). Is that indefinite time at 1600? 20 minutes? A day? Also, the assumptions used in calculating accident probabilities don't seem to be documented anywhere. Perhaps I missed it...

That's not the "think of the children" argument, that is a possibility of radioactive contamination. Note the use of "possibility" in that statement. Also note the use of "may" in the statement you quoted. They are qualifiers and there for a reason. Personally, I think it's you that has...

Talk about short-sighted. If a plane crashes, or in a car accident, only those directly involved die. In a nuclear accident, people hundreds of kilometres away may die. And even if they don't die, their children may be born deformed, or suffer sicknesses that require lifelong medical care...

Reading Anandtech/HOCP/TechReport and a few others gives the general impression that quad is starting to supplant higher clocked duals in games as well as multithreaded apps, and as these are the only things that really need to be sped up, then there isn't really a reason to go with dual core...

+1 for Samsung mobile phones. Look up U700 ribbon cable. That's an engineering/design fault, and they get away with it because consumers are too lazy to take action. On the flip side, I have had excellent service from Samsung's Monitor/TV unit.
