Timing of building a new system

Not sure which power supply calculator you used, but with triple the RAM, triple the drives, a decent add-on video card, and massive overclocking you still don't need anything more than a good 380W or any 420W PSU, with your actual draw probably in the <250W range.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I wonder what would happen if you swapped out the drive for one of your own? If I put an SATA SSD on this thing, it would rock!

Those waves are tough. So friggin' fast. Fun watching people think they have it, try to stand, and just get flipped off the top.

Didn't I already mention that I don't have a basement ;) I could have them drop down from the ceiling, though. My bed was on a pulley system to the ceiling when I was a kid (got the idea from "An American in Paris").

Nope. We have a small house, and the "home theater" is little more than a really nice "tv" in the living room. Other than bedrooms (which I can't use), there is only one big room.

With a BMI of 24.6, I am barely in the "normal" threshold. But I'm happy. To be in the middle of the BMI normal range I would need to be down to 168lbs...screw that.

My goal was to get under 200lbs before my birthday. I don't know if I would have made it if it weren't for having the flu for the last two weeks. Not the way I wanted to go about it, but 197lbs will have to do :)

As would I, but the space doesn't allow for it. The projector screen is surrounded by floor to ceiling cabinetry that I am not allowed reallocate. As the time gets closer, I may decide that it is worth the political hit to make it happen.

Clearly that is the optimal solution, however since that isn't an option (the space doesn't accommodate it, the wife wouldn't like it) the ceiling will have to do.

Timing of building a new system

I'll second all that. The amount of air passing through a case determines the amount of dust in it, and having a powerful intake grabs any nearby dust and pulls it in. Having faster fans in the chassis making sure there are no hot-spots is good, while having just enough airflow through the case...

No idea. Perhaps 20% worse? Just a guess. Like Sol, I am very far from an audiophile. Spending that much on a pair of speakers (actually, I need 3 pairs for the surround system - doubling up the center channel), guarantees that it is as good as I could possibly appreciate.

    Hurricane Irene

16 years ago there was a flood that got within half a mile of my current house. It would have had to spread for hundreds of square miles before climbing the ~9' of additional rise to the base of my property. Other than that, the gutter gets about 3" of standing water in the worst rainstorm every...

Wow. I was always a little jealous of people that had basements. Now I'm not. The whole house is 18" above the ground, and the property is 4' above the street. French drains under and around the house send everything to the street, the drains from the roof are fed into additional french drains...

I do want to buy a used car

With my last car, when the warranty had expired I stopped all maintenence. I did an oil change whenever the low oil light went on (about every 50k miles) and didn't do anything else. It ran for another 135k after that, and the guy I sold it to now has nearly 300k miles on it. Yay for VW...

Timing of building a new system

Honestly not something to worry about. From what I understand, HDMI has the DVI pinout spec in the cable. There is no tricky conversions or software, just moving pins to the different plug. So long as you intend to run resolutions below 1920x1080 I've done this dozens of times without issue.

    America is ungovernable

I don't think so. I've started a few companies in my life, some of them grew considerably before being sold. At the moment I (mostly) work for someone else. I did stop working for myself because I didn't want to deal with stuff. Taxes, regulations, and government bureaucracy played no role...

    America is ungovernable

I think that is a very optimistic view, jtr. I believe most of the problems in that bottom 20% are cultural, with the biggest problem being massive family sizes. #1 cause there is religion, specifically Catholicism and Christianity. Studies have shown that people who are less in control of their...
