Ah yes. Well, I can certainly tell you what it is not - that uninspired dirge "Advance Australia Fair." I'm partial to "For Australia" which you may or may not be familiar with - written by an extremely bright man and his late wife, who happens to be a neighbour of my parents' - Michael...

Errr, I seem to have stuffed up the formatting above. The intent of the post was to reassure Cliptin that I hold him in high esteem.

Ouch, That stings me a little bit. Not intended to, you read too much into it. Don't put yourself onto the exclusion list! All I meant is I don't automatically respect the people here just because they are members of SF, in the same way that I don't automatically respect world leaders...

Windows XP paging file & Speed Disk

I've found O&O Defrag will at least put the pagefile into one contiguous file, if necessary after every reboot. I haven't experimented with it enough to know if it will also move it to the front of the disk - I don't use it at present. It will also defrag the MFT, which may or may not be useful...

Thermal compound on new heat sinks

I was intrigued by the Intel P4 CPUs - you get effectively a thin piece of metal coated in black thermal transfer conpound. Because I wasn't familiar with it I tore it off and used grease, but perhaps it's good. Any thoughts/experience anyone?

Fair enough Merc. I was in mid post when you said the above, and I'm quite happy to stop here.

I think the President of the US is in a position where he can reasonably expect public comment about his decisions. I fail to see the merit of this argument. So is your argument that we should never discuss a topic that may offend an SF member? Or is it that having been informed of that offence...

article by Woody Harrelson; his take on Iraq & war.

I think the important thing to realise here is that I haven't insulted anyone. The certain derogatory term incident being played out here is not about anything I've said. As for the question about the members of SF, I don't respect them because they are members of SF, I respect certain ones...

It's funny because that does sum up my view of some of The Giver's postings, but there you go. I guess it's all a matter of perspective. Personally I'm a "respect the person, not the office" sort of guy. Respect is not necessarily accorded because that person's views agree with my own - there...

Oh, I have no argument with "fair dinkum," "strewth," "stone the crows," etc. I think the only reason "down under" annoys me is because it's a very northern-hemisphere view of things. Banjo is fine by me - learnt some of his stuff in school - and I'm okay with diggers of all types. That said...

Well, I assume it was used negatively, but then I know the author. ;) Since my dad isn't here to defend himself, it seems a bit difficult to come to a definitive answer. There are people in the US that admire Saddam Hussein, Hitler, Stalin, and so on. Is one not allowed to be critical or insult...

    "Fleet computer challenge"

I bought 4 Intel PCI Pro/100 NICs here on Ebay for AUD10 each (USD5.50) out of a lot of 50. Merc, if you like I can see if he has enough to service your needs (shipping will increase the cost, of course, but NICs aren't very heavy).

To be fair, considering your political leanings it's not surprising you see nothing bad in the man either. I think my father's hope is that the truth is somewhere in the middle.

article by Woody Harrelson; his take on Iraq & war.

The most telling event for me in this whole debate was when the Australian defence minister was asked by a journalist to describe any situation in which an invasion of a soverign country did not contravene international law. After standing speechless for a few seconds, he opened and shut his...

WHAT IF BUSH IS NOT CRAZY? I am a left-leaning, elitist, decaffeinated latte drinker, but I prefer shiraz to chardonnay. I have written and lectured on the folly of US policy in the Middle East. But I am also a sceptic and I have been professionally involved in international security affairs –...

PC Chips board resurrection after a year of death.

That's a great story, Coug. I guess you and I will stay as the only two in favour of SiS chipset AMD boards from ECS!

    Nice Windows System Info Tool

Yeah, coincidentally I found that app over the weekend too. On my new PC it detects the AGP as being 1x instead of 4x (GF4 Ti4200 on a Gigabyte GA-8SG667) and the voltages and CPU temps are all wrong (same with MBM).

planning to mod Tyan Tiger MP mobo, please review my plans

I'm just using an Enermax Whisper 350W. Before that it worked fine on an AOpen/Sparkle/Powerman 300W one. Tim, all being well (my girlfriend being organised, basically) the board went today. Later than I thought, but last week was absolutely flat out and I never got home before about 10pm. Sorry.

I'm reading the second edition of Total War by Peter Calvocoressi, Guy Wint, and John Pritchard, Invasion by Eric Harry, A Second Chance at Eden by Peter F. Leadtek mainboards - good?

Are you refuting the entire generalisation, or do you just object to Soltek through lack of explicit omission being included in it? Note I said "pretty much" above. That said, putting the tried and tested "Soltek crap" into Google gets 272 results. Of course, like any of the other...

    Leadtek mainboards - good?

David, To be fair I bet you that if you named pretty much any board you'd be able to turn up a seething pile of hatred expressed in postings on the 'net. Problems at 133MHz? http://forum.ocworkbench.com/ocwbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=27&t=001070 They're also running a poll ...

Intel vs. AMD? ATI vs. nVidia?

Bill, Thanks. I can live without hyperthreading I think, although it is a neat technology. I'm buying a GF4 Ti4200, it'll be a big upgrade (well, at least in benchmarks!) from my GF2 GTS.

    Leadtek mainboards - good?

Tony, You should probably update your page on the subject given your recently (re)exhibited hostility to the ECS boards. I run an ECS K7S5A board here with an Athlon 1000, and it has been rock steady - as I've pointed out before. The board is nowhere near as solid and heavy as the Tyan board I...

Intel vs. AMD? ATI vs. nVidia?

In the interests of adventure I've decided to try Intel on a SiS chipset. I have a house full of Athlons on various platforms - several VIA and one SiS - and I'd like to expand my repetoire a little.

Intel vs. AMD? ATI vs. nVidia?

I think DDR400 modules are indeed correctly clocked, ie. they're not overclocked DDR333 modules. True, it's not a standard yet, but as long as it works in the board, that doesn't really matter. Yes, there's an equivalent but slightly less well equipped Gigabyte board. The MSI board got a good...

Intel vs. AMD? ATI vs. nVidia?

Thanks for all this guys. That's the problem for me, that the (real) release of the 166MHz Athlons is so far in the future, and I don't really have the time to wait. I'm also thinking that there's Claw Hammer coming up late next year, perhaps it's best to just tread water for the moment until...

Intel vs. AMD? ATI vs. nVidia?

To add - I think I'm interested in buying a board with DDR400 support (where it makes a difference in performance), and S-ATA support. Intel or AMD really depends on which platform gets the greatest benefit from the combination I think.

    (New) Poll for Moderator!

Not so. I stated clearly what my objectives were as chairman at the time of my nomination. There has been no change in these. My remark was not meant to be derogatory towards either the office of chairman or president, or indeed any other elected member or founder of SF. It was a bit flippant...

Intel vs. AMD? ATI vs. nVidia?

The SiS 648 is a P4 chipset. About the Thermaltake heatsink/fan combo - what would you guys recommend in the quiet end of things? Serial ATA is an attraction since it adds a degree of future-proofedness. Bad reviews of KT400? Not as such, just nothing really positive (or negative, admittedly)...
