The only real minuses about Hobart that I can see are that it is a fair way from anything else urban (almost 2 hours flight to Sydney, about an hour or so to Melbourne, and REALLY far from places like London, New York, etc.), and there are only a certain number of things to do. If you like...

    (New) Poll for Moderator!

No, it's not deja vu, we're voting here for the new forum moderator to join our brave band after Time asked to be left out of the nominations. This is for an 18 month term starting on the 15th of October 2002. Note as president I will only vote in order to split a tie. (I'm sorta making rules...

Question about VPN & Dual Network Connections

VPN tunnels and your NIC should appear as seperate connections under Network Connections. Theoretically you should actually be able to route between them (right click on one, select "Bridge Coinnections"). You should then be able to connect to both your local network and your office network at...

... and I've since reformed. Okay, I'll leave this thread going until the end of the US weekend, then run the poll for a week (unless a clear winner emerges earlier), then nominate the new moderator in time for them to be ordained on the 15th. So far the nominees are... Prof. Wizard...

    Digital camera

I only paid about AUD580 in the end, buying it new in Singapore. It's a very nice camera, far better than what I need indeed. Not much use at all, really. The movie mode is a bit of a novelty, and you can get a respectable amount of video into a 128MB memory card. But what practical use is it...

    Nominations for moderator!

Well, it's that time again (actually, it's well past that time again) - time to nominate a new moderator to join our select band. As usual, this is for an 18 month term which will start from the 15th of October 2002. Just as a reminder, our current moderators are Mercutio and Cliptin (Flagreen...

Competing with Dell and other Indian companies

No, they roped me into a "key employee" contract and what with one thing and another - basically more responsibility - it's been quite hard to get back out. KPMG has been very patient, and I'm aiming for a resolution pretty soon. We had a VP out here last week, we have two senior managers and...

Competing with Dell and other Indian companies

We've just lately started selling a lot of IPLs from Australia to India, and also a few IPLs from Japan to Australia. Conclusion, it's cheaper to provide Japanese support in Australia and Australian support in India. Go figure. (Although it's tough to find Japanese speakers in India.)

Competing with Dell and other Indian companies

Every time you phone Vodafone in Australia your call is in fact answered in India. They get 3 months of "Strine" language training, accent and all, and every day before they start their shift they are given a briefing on what the weather is like around Australia, what the results from the game...

    What's a good photo printer?

As far as I can tell the toner is about AUD320 (say USD170) per colour (C, M and Y) for 10,000 pages, and we got about 5,000 pages from the starter black toner that came with the printer. New black cartridges seem to be about AUD130 for one that does 10,000 pages. We do a lot less colour...

    New breakthrough 60GXP fix revealed

SAMBA configuration, Linux server , W2K SP2 clients

I'm afraid I can't help much with Win2k. (XP makes life easier because the Policy Editor allows you to switch off encrypted passwords to 3rd party SMB servers, as opposed to fooling around in regedit.) However, I've never had much fun trying to use encrypted passwords on Samba servers - I know...

    What's a good photo printer?

This is perhaps a bit out of left field, and way more than you were intending to spend - but the Oki 7200C is really quite good in my experience, and it functions as a proper office workhorse printer as well. I think the resolution is 600x1200 dpi in colour, and it uses a different toner...

    9/11 my thoughts

My point was not in the specifics but in the general. (Besides, we're only discussing one specific example of a wider change.) The CPU Cooler Snap Judgement Guide

He's just such an entertaining writer. And the whole no-nonsense approach is so refreshing after the hordes of hardware sites where 0.5% is considered a "huge difference" in performance. He wisely sticks to the basics - does it work as advertised, does it do something useful and/or fun, is it...

Getting around brainless IP site blocking

It's not a great source of pride, but Batelco is actually a Cable & Wireless company. The rules under which they block sites are imposed on them by the government, and they must comply. 9/11 my thoughts

Slo, I'm afraid I see that as being a very anti-globalisation (dare I say, John Howard-esque  ) view of the world. 20 years ago if you went out for a meal in Australia, to use your example, your choice was basically bad UK-inspired food (meat and 3 veg, all overcooked), or the early...

My frienship to you my brothers!

Note, you'd also need a Smartcell battery to go with it. Dunno what you can get it for - a new set of 4 goes for $1700 or so, but you should be able to get them singly for less new and even less from auctions. Full disclosure here. When I bought it it didn't have a battery; I borrowed...

Hey Tony, wanna buy my Matrix 3000 UPS? Surely with 2750W of output power, you could run your whole shop off it for at least a while? I'm thinking of getting rid of it because with 3 big fans it's a little noisy for a home environment. It only cost me about AUD140 including shipping ($50 at...

Kate on "The Panel" pointed out we don't have a day to remember the 12,000 people that died at Bhopal, for example. I think what annoys me most are two things : 1) Everyone refers to it as "the day America changed" or some variation thereof, but I can't actually see much evidence of...
