When I'm doing development work I use much more than 2GB. Just the IDE and the Java server use 2GB of RAM. Without adding in Windows, Firefox, Toad or SQL Developer, Outlook, Photoshop, etc. My machine has a Q660 and 4GB of RAM and it's still slow.
Has everyone already forgotten that AIG was essentially acquired by the gov't during the last administration? The gov't also "loaned" them $152 billion by November 2008. This is not just an Obama thing.
One of my coworkers bought a Lenovo Ideapad S-10. This is the first netbook I've used. It seems pretty nice. Battery life appears to be around 3 hours. It came with a 160GB hard disk and 1GB RAM. He bought a 2GB chip and I installed it for him. I still think the screen resolution is a bit small...
32 bit Windows OSes can access 4GB of RAM.
Read this for more: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555223
Even if you install 4GB, you will only see ~3.5GB of memory in Windows, because of reserved memory space.
RAM/RAMDISK is not a great replacement for a quality SSD.
I made sure that my router is running on a different channel than everyone else in the building. I checked this when I initially setup the router and I checked it again yesterday.
I think the main problem with my current setup is that I am in a 101 year old building in a garden unit (basement)...
Well, when I move the router closer the signal is very strong. So, I figure if I put another AP halfway between the HTPC and the router this will accomplish essentially the same thing. Am I mistaken?
I got the new wireless card, but the connection quality is even worse than the old Linksys card. I moved my wireless router closer, but I can't leave it there for long as it's sitting in the hallway with an ethernet cable strung along the floor. I am now connected at around 108Mbps. And I am...
$560 per drive. That's a terrible price. Newegg sells the same drive for $363. They also don't appear to have a limit on the number of drives you can order. Though Newegg only appears to have 26 in stock.
I don't have a USB drive. I could buy one, but I think this will work for me. I just transfer the content overnight.
I do have a spool of cat-5e somewhere, but when it's not in use, I would have to find a place to put 70 ft of cable.
I watched Quantum of Solace in 1080p last night. The quality is amazing. The computer handled it no problem.
On the other hand, Quantum of Solace was not amazing.
I think I hate wireless networking. There really is no good way for me to run cat-5 though, so this is my only option. I will just hope that the new card solves my problem.
I think I will just have to wait and see. This is all rather hypothetical at this point.
Another option I am considering is to install DD-WRT on the router and boosting the wireless signal power. Is this possible? If so, is it recommended?
Well, I also want to get 802.11n speeds if possible too. Plus the new card was only $25.
Can anyone tell if that Encore adapter has a standard antenna connection, in case I want to add an external antenna?
I got the shipment yesterday and did the build last night. Went pretty smoothly, other than installing the Intel HSF. I though I cracked the board trying to install it, but it worked fine afterwards.
Everything seems to be working as I expected. Though the speeds I get with the LINKSYS WMP54G...
Firefox 3 with flashblock and adblock will block the majority of annoying popups, ads, etc. However, if you want to go a step further install noscript and then you will never get any popups. However, I found surfing with noscript annoying as hell so I removed it.
Geez that was a long article, but I made it through the whole thing. Very interesting. Too bad I still can't afford an Intel X25-M. That one part would cost almost as much as my entire HTPC.
Hopefully, within the next year or two all of these controller manufacturers will have learned how to do...
I think you could get away with something cheaper than the Intel drive. Something like the G.SKILL TITAN Series FM-25S2S-256GBT1 would probably work well. As long as you aren't trying to write to it random reads should be very fast.
I ordered all the parts minus the Blu-ray drive. If I have a need later to add that hopefully the prices will have come down.
I'll post back when I have it assembled.
Thanks for everyone's help.
That depends on the size of your cache. If you have a 1GB cache and nothing else is using it at that time, then yes, theoretically it would be as fast as the PCIe speed.
In most cases it's write cache. So, your OS will send something to your array to be written, and the card will send a signal back immediately saying it's written even if it's sitting in the cache. You'll want battery backup for this kind of setup.
It's quite possible that by doing the partition alignment you won't see any stuttering.
I haven't been able to try that yet. The problem with it is if you already have a running system and need to restore a image it will wreck the partition alignment during the restore. At least with Acronis...
Generally, your hdd light will stay lit continually until the drive can finish all of its writes. You will not be able to click on anything until it's finished. Normally under heavy writing with a mechanical drive you can still switch programs, open the Start Menu, etc. Under a long stutter with...
If I run XP as the HTPC OS, does it make more sense to use the 32 bit or 64 bit version? I would assume 32 bit, but let me know if there are any benefits/detriments to running the 64 bit version.
I put the pagefile on another drive. If your laptop only has one drive you could try turning the pagefile off, but some applications with refuse to run under this setup.
Another option is to use SteadyState and keep the pagefile turned on.
Signal strength is most likely quite low. The wireless router is in the very back of my condo and the HTPC will be all the way in the front. I haven't measured how far it is, but I would guess it is around 60 ft, plus there are some walls it will have to travel through. With a Dell laptop the...
