    Interview prospective peers

Everyone that interviews here has to take a 12 minute IQ test (Wonderlic). If you don't get a high enough score they conduct a mock interview with you and then send you home. I'm not sure how effective this is in screening candidates or how accurate a 12 minute written IQ test is. I would...

    Interview prospective peers

I would ask them to recall a scenario when they had to fix a tough problem and what steps they went through to get the problem fixed. If half the steps sound like: "well I went over and talked to the DBA and he fixed the problem with the DB server." You might want to find a more well-rounded...

    US vs. Japan

There are several people that I work with that have 90+ minute commutes. Now, this is mostly by train (Metra) in Chicago. I know very few people that drive regularly to work. However, that's still 3+ hours a day spent commuting, even if you don't have to deal with traffic.

My company's only allowed browser is IE6, because it's "supported." I think I hate hearing that word at work more than anything. It basically means that it's fine to use a steaming pile of shit as long as there's a support contract. It also means that paying $10k/year for support is a good idea...

    Major Appliances

My last place had a ceramic cooktop stove. It looked really nice when it was clean. However, it was almost never clean. It took a serious amount of time to get it clean and I had to use a specialty cooktop cleaner to get it to look clean. I would stay away from these, they are a pain in the ass.

    Major Appliances

I'll second that fridges with side-by-side doors sucks. It seems much smaller. My new place came with a GE Profile side by side and I don't like it very much. It also has ice access through the door and it leaks and jams open sometimes, which can't be good for the compressor or my electric...

SSDs - State of the Product?

It's NAND flash. So, it doesn't need power to retain data. I think most of the point of the card is to bypass the SATA bus and connect directly to PCI-E.

    Google creates new browser

Apple didn't develop WebKit. They used the base code of Konqueror. I've used Safari on Windows and it's an abysmal experience. I've used it on OS X 10.5 and it's pretty bad there as well.

    Google creates new browser

After playing around with it for a few more minutes it seems that the rendering is very quick. Spawning a bunch of tabs might be a little bit slower then Firefox, but I would guess that this is because it has to spawn a new process for every new domain you open. I'm running this on my work...

    Google creates new browser

You can download it now: http://www.google.com/chrome It really doesn't seem faster than Firefox 3. There is no option to open a new tab when I type something in the address bar either, which bugs me to no end. I realize it's a beta, but I hope they fix these problems. I have no need for...

I'm now looking at motherboards and Shuttle barebones systems at Newegg to use for this HTPC system. I think if Chicago got the Olympics in 2016 it would bankrupt the local governments and people like me would spend the next 20 years paying much higher taxes. I don't think that matters, because I don't think the IOC will pick us anyways. The IOC seems to be heavily focused on picking a city...

I don't particularly like any event where the winner is completely based on the judges.
