    Another HTPC Thread

If it's too loud, I will replace the Samsung drive with an SSD and move the drive to my other computer. However, 1TB for $100 is too hard to pass up. This will also only be on a wireless network, so I want to have enough local storage to keep a bunch of DVD images on there.

Point noted. I'll plan on the E5200, that's a pretty good savings over the E8400.

    I'm getting close to ordering the parts for a HTPC build. I already have an Antec NSK2480. So, that's the case I'll use. Other parts I'm considering: Gigabyte GA-E7AUM-DS2H LGA 775 NVIDIA GeForce 9400 Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 Samsung Spinpoint...

    Hard Disk for Thinkpad R51

My Dad will be using it, he just surfs the web. So, speed wasn't a big concern as long as it is faster than the 30GB drive that came with the laptop.

    Hard Disk for Thinkpad R51

Is there any reason the R51 wouldn't support a drive larger than 80GB? That's what the spec said. The Samsung drive looks good. If the notebook will support it then I'll probably get that. This is my Dad's laptop. It came with a 30GB drive, it's basically full and it runs extremely slow. So, I...

    Seagate 7200.12 1 TB

How many people actually want to worry about setting up RAID 0? Not to mention that your failure rate is going to be terrible. So, now I have to worry even more about backups and restoration plans. I might also need to worry about keeping a spare drive on hand. If I can match that speed with a...

    Sprint Smartphone

I ended up getting a Blackberry Curve 8330. I tried all the smartphones that they offered and l liked this one by far the best. The HTC Diamond Touch seemed slow. Plus this will only cost me 100 after rebate.

SSDs - State of the Product?

This is what I followed. I did the "fast" way, as I don't store my data on the boot drive. One thing I haven't been able to figure out is whether SteadyState is caching writes to the other drives in my system or only writes to the boot drive. I wouldn't think it would do that, but I don't know...

SSDs - State of the Product?

I decided to install XP with SteadyState to see if it would have a large enough performance benefit to downgrade from 2003 Server. SSDs - State of the Product?

There are strategies for formatting these drives with a block size that matches the size of the erase block. When a MLC SSD needs to write some data, it has to clear the space before it can write to it. Most drives have to clear 512KB of space before writing. So, even if you are writing a 1KB...

$80 is pretty standard if not below market rates. When I worked at a tech shop in 2000, our minimum rate was $59. Given this is 9 years later, it doesn't seem very bad. If you brought your car to the dealership what would the minimum fee be there?
