    Reading Multiple Cards

Tea, PCMCIA CF readers are horribly slow, CPU gobbling sloths. No DMA. You'd be lucky to get over 1MB/sec. There are CardBus (32bit) CF readers, such as this one: http://www.dpreview.com/news/0310/03102103delkincardbustest.asp Can be had from Buy.com for around US$48 (AUS$2billion), costly...

[NEWZ]: Seagate Releases 400 GB "DB35" DVR Hard Dr

The standard Maxtor 160GB SATA drive in my SA8300HD STB is quite capable of recording two HD streams, whilst playing back a previously recorded third HD stream. The drive can make a fair racket when doing three streams. I have yet to see a STB that can record from more than two tuners...

Outlook 2003, where has my News tab gone?

A question for the Office gurus amongst us. I tried adding the News command to the "Go" menu (which has to be done in Outlook 2003 to open the newsreader). Unfortunately I dropped it on the standard toolbar, instead of the Go menu itself. And now it's gone, no longer in the customise menus...

Earth quakes & tidal waves kill thousands in SE Asia

I spoke to my Mum today, and got the whole story. We run two beach resorts, one on the West coast right on the beach, and one in the South which is built on the slope of a hill, high off the water. She and my uncle were at the Southern resort on Boxing Day, and were notified that the water at...

I just experimented a bit and this is what I've found with jpg/tiff. Right click on the top bar, select more. Untick date modified, dimensions, etc, anything unnecessary. Then OK. Then immediately go to Tools->Folder Options->View->"Apply to all Folders". This gives me near instant "Detail"...

Video editing solution? Burning to DVD?

Make sure you are running the latest firmware for the Sony drive (2.1c). It should give you max burns of 8x. http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru530adwn.htm Also try some cheaper, faster media. I have had good results with Verbatim 16x rated DVD+R.

Earth quakes & tidal waves kill thousands in SE Asia

The Bam earthquake in Iran one year ago killed approx 50,000. I would expect the death toll from the tsunami/earthquake to exceed 100,000. There are still large segments that they have had no reports from.

Of course my mother went to Sri Lanka for the Christmas hols. Can't get thru on the phone, not suprising cause the phone and electrical system is probably down. One thing that would make the death toll worse in Sri Lanka is that there are a lot of shanty towns and fishing villages that...

Seeking suggestion for Stand alone DVD player

It does do DTS, problem is that with the region free firmware, it will say "Cannot decode DTS" when a DTS audio stream is selected. Simply hit OK on the remote, and it will continue on it's merry way, DTS sound intact. I would recommend the Panny S97, but it's $250 and upconversion via HDMI is...

Suggestions for hooking up cable internet

It seems "Premium" has a 512Kb upload limit. Given the cost of around $70 per month, it hardly seems a worthwhile upgrade from standard RR. Maybe if they increase the upload to 756Kb. What are your upload speeds like JoJo? And any bandwidth caps?

    Highest Bridge in the World

IIRC the route is part of a national highway, basically this is the only part that required you to do the zig-zag thing down one valley, thru a tiny town with very narrow streets, then back up the zig zag on the other side. The bridge basically cuts out a couple of hours drive time in peak...

God those sneaky IBM basturds. Looking at the link above, you would swear the freaking thing comes with a 36GB U320 SCSI drive, and an 80GB SATA drive. But when you click on configure, low and behold, it's a multi hundred dollar option to get a SCSI drive. Shady.
