I went around and did OS updates on my few Synology boxes after Heartbleed became a known issue, but mine are all just stand-alone NASes that only talk to client PCs. I pulled the drives before I did the OS update as standard practice. I don't remember having any issues.

I've bought IBM and Dell machines in the past that had the trays, but they were full preconfigured systems rather than barebones. Intel always gives me the trays, too.

It appears that the first one I opened is just bad hardware. Machine #2 behaves like a computer that works. Lenovo also didn't ship me any drive trays. They're $25 apiece. Jerks.
