    Media Player Appliances

Plex allows for sharing server access to anyone you've invited. That means that you can make your Plex server available on someone else's xbmc setup, assuming you have the bandwidth to support their requests. As far as the appliances themselves, I don't know that things have changed enough...

    Upgrade Lenovo laptop

The twist I've run in to with Lenovo laptops is that the internal controller writes a unique ID to drives as they are set up for the notebook. You can USE any drive you want, but you need to make sure that if the drive is going to be used on the internal controller, that it is in the internal...

    Replacement for PeerBlock?

Must've missed this when it was new. Anyway, I've been using PrivateInternetAccess.com for few weeks. Unlike BTguard, where I almost never saw torrents transferring at over 200kb/sec, I am actually sustaining almost 4MB/sec in aggregate downloads right now. It's painless to switch the location...

    Something Random

Back in December, I took my ladyfriend on an adventure to an Apple store to get her iphone fixed after it fell out of her purse. It wasn't under warranty, so she paid $150 for a replacement. In January it fell out of her coat pocket onto concrete floor and the screen broke. Rather than pay...

Seagate does not have a News Thread

Seagate announced the other day that they're discontinuing 2.5" 7200rpm drives in favor of high capacity 5400rpm models and hybrid drives for performance. Seagate also announced some 3.5" hybrid drives. I've had a few hybrid drives and, other than a modest subjective improvement in boot/resume...

Acronis TrueImage 2013 to backup VMWare Workstation live?

Are you doing any kind of dismount or backup on SQL Server? That's something you can configure through Management Studio and the instructions for doing it are completely google-able. I'm not sure how to tell you to test, except that a live database would be wonderful. The problem I always have...

Acronis TrueImage 2013 to backup VMWare Workstation live?

I've not been very impressed with Acronis Nonstop Backup in any implementation to date. I have not tried the 2013 version. Are you trying to back up live VMs? Are you at least going to snapshot them or something prior to imaging? My guess is that you'll wind up with technically bootable .VMDKs...

In the last month, I've had five different people ask me if I could convert some misbegotten PDF back in to its editable source. Sometimes, it's possible and sometimes it's not. Today it was a Powerpoint presentation so the answer was no. I suspect this is going to become a bigger and bigger...

    question Which Tablets

It came and went so I guess we won't be getting anything like that. Samsung is having an event in a week or so and they're definitely launching a new Galaxy phone. I'm curious to see if they also update their tablet line. The Note 10.1 is the current flagship, and it's a BIG step down from the...

That might be true, but that has absolutely nothing to do with the functional use of the product. "OMG they didn't put a pull strap under the tablet in its snug little box so it's automatically wrong forever" isn't a valid criticism of the product unless the product you're reviewing is the...

I have a DLink Wireless USB kit that I was messing with in relation to some point of sale equipment. It was kind of awful. Cheapest way to combine 18 Linux servers into one (or two)

I'm almost positive that ESXi is limited to only one physical CPU of up to six real cores. That's how I read the license agreement anyway. Xen seems relatively straightforward and it's already baked in to some *nix systems. The thing that still gives me pause with all the available...

Wireless USB is only certified for operation at "2.0" or Superspeed, and even then only at ranges under 3m. At 10m, speed drops to 100Mbit. Good luck with that conduit.

How do you determine which drive is attached to \device\ide\ideport3?

How do you determine which drive is attached to \device\ide\ideport3?

The disk ordering rules are pretty much the same as the rules for ARC paths in the old boot.ini files. You can absolutely have a DC with only one physical drive, if that's what you're asking. Moving the database location with ntdsutil might be an exercise in one's patience on a working install, but if you're starting from scratch it's not really an issue. If you want to use Windows softRAID 1...

How do you determine which drive is attached to \device\ide\ideport3?

I'm guessing there are a bunch of identical drives, right? Device Manager will show the drive serial number under the details tab, listed as "Siblings." If you you look in Disk Management, you should be able to see which drive is considered port 3 (which SHOULD be the 4th port overall) and...

As a note, Windows internal backup supports directory service restores in ways that some third party backups do not.
