question How do people buy music these days?

Speaking of Pandora, I flipped it on for the first time in many months last night. It sounds horrible and over-compressed to me. Like maybe a 64kbps MP3? BAD. Does anyone know what it actually delivers?

    Mozilla Thunderbird

The only Thunderbird Add-on I use regularly is one that syncs Thunderbird and Gmail contacts. I do find it ironic that there's no decent way to set up two-way calendar sync with outlook and gmail without paying for something-or-other, but I'm not a calendar-using person in any case. At any...

If it's a derivative of open code, Apple didn't make a decision to open a goddamned thing.

I'm about 98% sure that Webkit was a fork of the already OSS Konqueror project.

I believe that -WS label indicates a workstation class board. When I tried an LGA1155 Xeon in a P67-based board, it wouldn't boot at all.

question How do people buy music these days?

There is an open-source .aac codec called FAAD2. .aac itself really isn't widely supported outside of Apple products and Apple more or less doesn't belong in any discussion of openness ever.

Amazon's Cloud Music services work on Android (but not iOS). You could've downloaded to your phone and copied from there as well.

question How do people buy music these days?

I purchase discs. I rip them to .flac if I can (SACDs can't be ripped unless I feel like blowing $400 on a Playstation 3 with a particular firmware revision). Every so often I buy a downloadable from Amazon.com, usually because it's a single track or only available in that format. Very little of...

    Best movie you've seen

The thing about Six Feet Under is that by the middle of the second season I hated all of the characters so much I actually wanted awful things to happen to them. Once I realized that I quit watching. Game of Thrones starts again on Sunday, by the way. Which Coug would love. Except for one...

problem Seagate GoFlex 4TB USB 3.0

Actually I think I paid $209 for mine but I just got them from Newegg. Pretty sure it was in one of their daily emails a couple weeks ago. I've seen them for $199 in sales flyers from Best Buy so it's at least possible to get them that cheap.

problem Seagate GoFlex 4TB USB 3.0

$199 is a much better price than $349. The drives are simply part of the redundant storage pool on my NAS anyway. There isn't any content on them that is not duplicated at least three other places.

problem Seagate GoFlex 4TB USB 3.0

I don't think you can get the bare drives and even if you could, they'd cost significantly more because internal drive pricing is still retarded right now.

problem Seagate GoFlex 4TB USB 3.0

All the Seagate enclosures I've seen in recent memory are tamper proof so that they can't be disassembled without someone knowing about it. Since the warranty on Seagate drives is so short anyway, I don't think I'm giving much up by trashing the shitty enclosure.

    Remote Desktop Support

As I recall, LogMeIn is basically just an extension to VNC anyway. VNC is pretty much always going to be dreadful on anything that isn't at least 10Mbit. Even tightvnc is nothing like RDP in terms of responsiveness.

    Remote Desktop Support

There WAS just a patch to RDP to fix a well-known vulnerability. Windows 8

I'm using Windows 8 with three monitors. Since it took me forever to figure out, you CAN move a Metro app to another screen. You do it with Win+PgUp/PgDn. Sort of analogous to the Win+left/right shortcut to re-arrange non-retarded applications in Win7.

xbmc makes HTPCs usable. The addon system is kind of retarded since addons break all the time, but at times you can have a single interface for local content, Youtube, Vimeo, Netflix, Amazon streaming etc. It will also scrape your files for online metadata if your filenames aren't all jacked...

I added two 4TB drives that I ripped out of Seagate USB enclosure to my FreeNAS machine with no incident. One of them is on one of the native motherboard ports, the other is on RAID controller. I know maybe two people who would be impacted by that. For the most part, when I explain what media center is for, people still say "Why would I want to hook my computer up to my TV?" and then look at me funny. And for everyone else, there's XMBC.

The new iPad - iPad 3

As far as I can tell, Apple's decision matrix for doing everything comes down to: 1. Can we make it with fewer buttons? 2. Can we put more brushed aluminum on it? 3. Can we make it so it doesn't work without itunes? I don't know where lack of proper LTE support fits into that. Maybe the chips...

    Best movie you've seen

Hunger Games was good as a movie, but the books are written from a first-person present perspective, so the movie is missing a lot of the interior monologue of the main character; the movie depicts the possibility of a budding romance where the book focuses strictly on a pragmatic survivor.
