    Something Random

My previous system ran flawlessly for 5 years and is still sitting around, booting up readily when I want it to. It used to be on 14x7. I built my current system in 2006, but it hasn't seen much use.

How to use a wireless router as a bridge?

Me too. I had no idea what that thing was till a mentor kindly explained. This was in the early days of my networking experience. I started out as a business apps guy, then messed with minicomputer OSes, then with networking and HW. It has been an interesting journey!

    Drive imaging software

Terabyte's Image for Win and Image for Dos is what I have. I have only used the latter, but it fits on a single floppy and will burn a CD or DVD, even if it is on a USB port or on FW. I can't comment on the Win part of it, but compared to Ghost, DriveImage, etc., this one's light years ahead.

    Dell G2410 LCD 24" - any good?

    It's like the Cowon S9 PMP. Display is 480 x 272. Why the extra 2 pixels? I guess it's a manufacturing thing.

    UPS with long battery life

Some APC UPSes support an external battery pack. I have a BackUPS 1500 with a BR24BP external battery pack; great way to extend run time. The battery pack looks like a smaller UPS, stands next to it, and plugs into the back of the UPS. Have had no issues with either.

    Portable media player

I wish the Cowon S9 took some kind of flash card. The Cowon A3 is supposed to be pretty darn good too, except for somewhat quirky controls. Models with HDD capacities of 30, 60, 80 GB. Pradeep's Sony X series looks like it's so new it's not available to buy in the U.S. yet, though it is...

    Portable media player

Thanks Merc, Pratap and Howell. The Cowon that Merc suggests is certainly imprssive; perhaps even overkill from a display quality perspective. It's still a pretty impressive unit. The limited storage (32GB flash) is certainy a concern. Oddly, they have a pretty good sales / service network in...

    Portable media player

I was gifted a 5th generation 60 or 80 GB Video Ipod Classic in 2006. It stayed in the box till a couple of weeks ago, when I had to "set it up" at my daughter's insistence (she's 13). She's using it now. I played with it a bit and was rather taken with the ability to put video clips on it...

    Where is the next CPU?

I spent some time on the weekend looking for a good case that supports E-ATX, can take 6 HDDs, has deccent cooling and a good layout. Such a beast either does not exist or costs a small fortune. The ones I liked best were some of the Lian-Li ones, but they are frighteningly expensive.

Some kind of EMI interference? Relocate the monitor near the server to another place (perhaps near the wall monitor) and see what happens.

    Optimising for very small files

Also, whatever the cluster size on the disk is, the OS reads/writes certain KB at a time (this is fixed), and if the two are different (disk and OS) you end up with overheads. I have forgotten what WinNT OSes use; getting old, forgetting things and not actually caring anymore.

Upgrade Core Duo Dell E1505 to Core2 Duo?

There was a 3rd party defragger in the DOS days that I loved - Super PC-Kwik which read a text file you created and moved one list of files to the beginning of the drive and another to the end.
