Boot drive. Absolutely everything depends upon your O/S. If you primarily depend/use one particular app, then maybe a drive for that might be appropriate, but most people use lots of apps, less often with lots of data files. ATA should be good enough for these. Seeing those numbers though...

Does Temp 3 ever fluctuate? If it doesn't (try putting your CPU under heavy load), then it may be a misreported value. What BIOS are you using? There is also a note in the readme about the IT8712F about changing a particular parameter.

There is an F8 BIOS on the Taiwan site, but there have been some rumblings that the F7 & F8 BIOS' can be a little trouble. I haven't struck anything yet though. The F9 is due soon, and the beta testers are liking it a lot.

If cost is the limiting factor, your HDD arrangement is about as good as it gets. You will want each hard drive on a differrent channel--easy to do with SATA, harder with IDE/PATA. I'd suggest 1 PATA as your boot 2 x SATA. partitioned as appropriate. Get yourself an Athlon X2 3800+ I do...
