Splash: Any tricks for SCA/SCSI Supermicro 5 drive box?

Bah! You think that's bad. The Tekram U160 from Buck arrived and I ripped it open and thought great--now for some SCSI luvin'. Identified the connector on the card I wanted (U160) and then went fark! Which frikkin' cable!!! There were three in the box, a 50 pin Wide (??) which sort of looks...

    SCSI questions from a n00b

Boot drive. Absolutely everything depends upon your O/S. If you primarily depend/use one particular app, then maybe a drive for that might be appropriate, but most people use lots of apps, less often with lots of data files. ATA should be good enough for these. Seeing those numbers though...

    Holy Hurricane, Batman!

That's my pont. I've seen buildings that passed the code that weren't up to spec. Dodgy trades people are very inventive. So where does that leave the people who have tried to do the right thing but have still been caught out by a combination of circumstances? I don't think it is or can be a...

    Holy Hurricane, Batman!

So you make a law that "enshrines" these building codes. And some fly-by-night builder builds you a home that he says meets the code--but doesn't. Hurricane Merc blows in :D and blows down your house. You aren't insured, and fly-by-nighter has skipped town/state/country. Should you qualify...

    Wireless networking

Because the SO won't let me run cable through the roof and across to the detached garage/shed--she said something about the place looking like downtown Beirut--to hook up my system inside to the boxes in the shed will require a wireless solution. As I know jack about wireless, what do I need...

Does Temp 3 ever fluctuate? If it doesn't (try putting your CPU under heavy load), then it may be a misreported value. What BIOS are you using? There is also a note in the readme about the IT8712F about changing a particular parameter.

I tried the Gigabyte util for about two days. After the third or fourth UAE, sorry GPF, sorry programmer weenie did big boo boo, I ditched it for SpeedFan. Seems OK so far. Not as good as MBM IMO, but much better than the Gigabyte/Abit bloat ware products.

    Win2k restart/shutdown problem

BIOS issue? I know you copied things to a new box, but stay with me. After hunting aroung, I'm leaning towards either a Maxtor Atlas 10K V or 15K II--For the price of a Cheetah 18GB, I can get a 26GB Atlas. The 10K is cheaper and seems to do well over at SR (testbed 4). Thoughts?

    Mounting a Heat Sink

This is not what I disagreed with. Nor did I say that matter was not solid, though I'm fairly certain  that thermal grease does not operate on the sub-atomic level. But what has this got to do with thermal grease? Thermal grease works by filling in the air gaps between two mated...

Best Hard Drive Configuartion for a Development Workstation?

If cost is the limiting factor, your HDD arrangement is about as good as it gets. You will want each hard drive on a differrent channel--easy to do with SATA, harder with IDE/PATA. I'd suggest 1 PATA as your boot 2 x SATA. partitioned as appropriate. Get yourself an Athlon X2 3800+ I do...
