Working all night, I notice I start talking to myself at around 2AM. Shortly thereafter I start to make the really big mistakes ;)

    Windows 7

Nevermind. Photoshop installed and ran great, and so did Firefox 3, SpaceMonger, and Flight Simulator X. But it is just that moment slow...everywhere. If it is slow on this machine, I don't want to know what it will be like on something less. Prepping a new slipstreamed copy of XP x64 as we speak.

I actually know absolutely nothing about compressors. All I knew was that canned air was stupid, wasteful, and expensive. I got a Craftsman 1HP/2Gal electric air compressor for $100. The shop will be providing me with a hose and moisture removal thingie (I didn't know I needed one). When I was...

    Windows 7

There is indeed a media center. The beta is the Ultimate edition. I'm typing this from Windows 7 installed on the beast I recently built. I'm torn between calling it Vista SP2 or what Vista should have been. It certainly isn't revolutionary enough to be a new OS; but I didn't really want a new...

    The Last Case

That is a whole lot of drives. I would be leaning towards a Cooler Master Stacker full of SATA hotswap racks. That is probably the best in terms of flexability. If you can get by with less drives, I'd point you towards an Antec P190/1200. Best in terms of layout, thermals, acoustics, aesthetics...

Well, thanks for the info. I've got mine in a storage room for now. Hopefully it will go away eventually.

OK, I have one that uses oil. Is it going to continue to smell? Or is it a break-in thing?

    My new system

Found it. The board didn't default to the correct memory settings. I've upped all the voltages just a bit, and am poking at things. 3.3Ghz right now. From what I've read I will hit the ceiling for the QPI first, as there are a limited number of multipliers and I'm already at the bottom one...

Reading up on how to OC now, though I have had some instability already, I'm blaming it on some software bits (BSOD when performing large print jobs, whatever).

Mid-2009 is 6 months away, that isn't that far. And I have a 250GB SSD right here already, and it cost less than a grand.

Put that in your laptop and smoke it ;) Very cool. I was just considering installing a pair of 1TB disks in my workstation for additional space, I think I can wait a while....

It is an electric compressor, but did have me add some oil for something. Not sure what or why.

    MIA members

In San Francisco, when I lived there, there was a major problem with cars killing pedestrians. The city decided that the best way to stop it would be to paint the chalk outlines of those killed permanently onto the street where they fell. There was one on my walk to work, and it certainly got my...

Nope, in America. Having to reach across and shift with the left hand while driving in traffic (signaling, etc) was a challenge. Could be worse, a buddy of mine lost his left leg. He has a hell of a time with the clutch.

    My new system

I was very close to going with the 920 as well. My move for the 940 was purely insurance towards a good overclock. From what I read, 4Ghz (my target) is more difficult with the 920. Some have dome more with a 920, but few stable and certainly not guaranteed. The RAM is fairly low-latency...

    Home Theatre setup, 2009

I build and maintain all the computers in the office (I am the only IT guy), so I work on 3-5 systems a day. In addition to doing all the higher-end duties (budget, purchasing decisions, contracts, etc) and the lower end ones (at the moment, reviewing the security tapes).

    Heat Sink Bends Mobo

My i7 board had a metal backing plate under the CPU already (I've read in reviews that other boards have them, too). In addition, the CPU cooler I'm using has its own backing bolt-through plate. A crazy amount of pressure on the CPU and no bending. See my list here.

    My new system

It has been a while since I keyed one in here, but I'm stoked about the new rig: Intel i7 940 (still at stock 2.93Ghz) Thermalright TRUE Black 120 HSF (with Noctua NF-S12 fan) Gigabyte EX58-UD5 (yes, the expensive one. Some of the features are insane*) 6x OCZ 2GB 1600MHz DDR3 (two 3-packs)...

    Heat Sink Bends Mobo

I'm pretty confident that the HSF popping off was user error. The i7 stock setup looks identical to the 775 kit (but a bit bigger), so I won't be bothering with it. I have a Thermalright TRUE Black 120 and the LGA1366 bolt-thru kit for it. Hopefully that won't warp the board too badly.

In my office. Its only noisy when it charges, and I have it charge at night. My current complaint is that it smells awful (something about the oil in the motor?).

    Android Phones?

In the opinion of every corporate IT guy I've read. The fact that some idiot bought one and made his IT department make it work only reinforces the point. It is a fashion accessory, and is only good for listening to music and showing your friends your crappy pictures. That it is capable of more...

    Android Phones?

Some people around here are interested, but I'm cautious to buy the first one as well. I will have one of the Nextel/Blackberry smart phones by next week to play with. Considering I'm planning to migrate the whole company to Google Apps/Gmail for domain, Android seems like the obvious choice.

Not the newer ones I've tried. My wife has a fairly indeniable Russian accent, and the VR in Vista handles it quite well. And it can handle me halfway through a bottle of wine, which isn't bad ;)

    E5200 - 12.5 X 200, 9.5 x 266, or 7.5 x 333 ?

Good point. My only guess would be that default is 12.5 x 200. They never stop you from turning it down, just up.
