    1. Take some old desktop you already have sitting around. Install the smallest, crappiest drive you have sitting around and five other, identical drives that are not Seagate or WD "Eco" models. 2. Install FreeNAS. Configure the drives as a single zPool. Turn on SMB networking. Share the zPool...

It's pretty close to zero, except as a stupid penis-measurement tool. The funny bit is seeing scores THAT ridiculous on a virtual computer in the first place. If nothing else, there's no way that number has any real meaning if it's associated with the actual video hardware in that computer.

The problem is, OCZ just has no support at all. Maybe they have a zillion engineers optimizing the hell out of their firmware, but since I've always communicated with the same human being doing support, I wonder if it's just that one guy doing everything for everybody who has a problem in North...

    2TB drives under the duopoly

The drives definitely do drop out of Windows SoftRAID also. They can't even keep their shit together for an ICH10 RAID1 of two drives.

    Samsung Drive

I am absolutely talking about RAID. You're worried about bad sectors screwing up irreplaceable files, and RAID5/6 or distributing the data in a zPool would absolutely help guard against that. It's not perfect or infallible but it's a start. You should probably also look at an online backup system.

I haven't found any way to readily monitor for corruption. Presumably the CRC data from a RAID5 or a zPool would help out quite a bit. It's not like you don't have plenty of drives sitting around to do such a thing.

It's not my thing, but I can respect it. Those guys legitimately know how to play their instruments and the ability to improvise is way, WAY harder than it sounds. For jazz I just prefer small ensembles. I think the most recent Jazz recording I've purchased was something by Christian McBride.

It is my observation that heavy metal fans mostly tend to be quiet and unassuming folks in person. I'm doing with them what I'd do with any other drive, especially when I have a whole, whole bunch of them. I'm only using half of what I have; ultimately I don't think I'd trust anything less than a RAID51-like configuration to begin with.
