No one. We're talking about phones. Now ask who wants a phone with that resolution.

... nope. That's up from a maximum of 800x480, the resolution my six year old HTC6100 had.

I was rather more surprised to learn that Windows Mobile 8 is going to be upgraded to allow a maximum screen resolution of 1024x600.

    Surface with Windows 8/RT

I think there will be a never-ending comparison to Apple that Microsoft can't possibly win since it's not a sufficiently religious experience, no matter how powerful or capable the devices are.

SSDs - State of the Product?

Windows 7 once told me that a machine with a Vertex 3 on a 6Gpbs SATA port only scored a 5.9 on the experience index. I re-ran the tests a couple times and on the third run it jumped up to 7.8. I really don't think the Experience Index measures anything meaningful.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I not feeling a subjective difference between my Samsung 830 and the X25M I pulled for it. But having four times the capacity is still quite nice. Makes my VMs load up nice and quick.

    low-end laser printers these days?

I don't like the precedent, really. But it's not like I print all that much, either. A ($45) 1500 sheet cartridge will probably last me a few years. At which time it will probably be cheaper to buy yet another printer. In contrast, HP wants $80 for a new, 2500 sheet black toner cartridge.

    low-end laser printers these days?

It was cheaper for me to buy a brand new Samsung color laser printer today than it was to get the four toner cartridges my HP1600 needs.

Sept. 19th is "Talk like a Pirate Day"

I made it to the Indiana Dunes National Lake Shore last weekend. For the first time. Kind of weird since I've worked less than a quarter mile from one of the main public beaches for the past seven years or so. Anyway, it was also devoid of pirates.

My weeks of waiting for RMAs to even be acknowledged certainly suggests that to be the case.

SSDs - State of the Product?

As a well known hardware/tech site owner, Anand clearly has access to and relationships with OEMs that the rest of us can only dream of. I have no idea if he takes direct advertising or not, but given the fact that vendors bend over backwards to offer him pre-release products and special units...

SSDs - State of the Product?

I suspect he's been bought and paid for a few times by different OEMs, much like Tom of Tom's Hardware. With a little help from a friend and a planned stop at Microcenter, I'm going to be able to build two i3-2100 systems with 120GB SSDs for a total of $704 this week. How sweet is that?

    The obligatory Blackberry thread

It's worth pointing out that RIM had already stated that it wants to simplify its manufacturing and logistics chain. Though, with a billion dollars in inventory on hand, it sounds like it could simplify way, way more. Did anyone else catch this little tidbit on the Galaxy SIII? AES encrypted...

question How to effectively delete data from magnetic media? I mean professional way.

A scanning electron microscope can resolve images down to .2nm. I suspect that pissing off the wrong first world power could lead to a demonstration of just what the state of the art in data recovery really is. I pretty much figure that at the point that the drive has been purposefully...

SSDs - State of the Product?

I'm really liking the sudden, amazing price drops on 120GB SSDs. In the last week or so, I've found Kingston, Verbatim and Corsair units at or a little under $1/GB, which is cheap enough that I can realistically contemplate using one in a mainstream build. In a year I'm sure I'll look back at...

Could be that there was some sort of weird edge-case bug that didn't show up in regular testing. I couldn't work out exactly which add-on was causing the problem, but I use so many of them that systematically testing all of them would have been a couple days' worth of work. Stuff happens. At...
