Given the way you treat chassis, perhaps you could just mount the board on some reinforced concrete instead. :)

    Laptop Recommendations?

The HP Probook 4530 is in your price point and I recommend them mainly for the fact that they are inexpensive business products. They have a ridiculous load of crapware on them, but the hardware is decent enough. You can also find brand-new previous generation Thinkpads on sites like Amazon.com...

    portable usb charging

I have a four-outlet inverter in my car that has my GPS, phone, phone-I-use-for-music-storage and a Thinkpad AC adapter plugged into it. It was fine. I've just think that "You're welcome" is the proper response to being sincerely thanked. This thread has been read nearly 50 times now and no one else said it.

    H77 chipset

I suspect that a lot of EE CPUs are purchased because someone has a budget that says computers should cost $X and the only way they're going to get to $X is with a $1000 CPU. That's certainly the the case with the steel mill most of my students come from.

    The death of Best Buy

I'd have to make a 150 mile round trip to visit a Trader Joe's. Which is not impossible. I know where all of the Chicago-area locations are and I make it a point to stop if I'm near one. They really do have awesome stuff. I love their foil packaged spiced soybeans and I've never found anything...

I didn't build it, but I had a setup like that at one time. It was on an outdoor antenna and I actually sold it back to the guy who did build it after I moved out of that place. The death of Best Buy

I am actually thinking more about TVs and appliances than I am computer gear. Other stores may have a selection of those products, but what other US retailer has 25,000 square feet devoted to either?

    H77 chipset

Yes, but "budget" chipset will fill the needs of some ungodly percentage of desktop systems at this point. I suspect, though I have no evidence to support this assertion, that 90-something percent of extreme edition and k-series processors never get overclocked or paired with a dual GPU...

    The death of Best Buy

Starting around the beginning of this year, I've seen a lot of press suggesting that US retail electronics giant Best Buy is in serious trouble. It's fairly obvious to anyone who buys any sort of electronics that online is a better option for almost everything anyway, but once I start to see...

    Something Random

A LOT of hardware just doesn't support 5GHz. Most cheap notebooks, phones and tablets only support 2.4GHz. My Galaxy tablet sees both, but my Motorola Xoom and HTC Evo only do 2.4GHz. In a lot of cases there's just not a decent option except to try to carve out some kind of niche in 2.4GHz; it's...

    2TB drives under the duopoly

People are always more likely to report difficulty than success, or what fraction of drives are being reviewed, or how many drives the reviewer had experience with prior to review. I have a co-worker who has carried around the same POS Dell Inspiron for seven years. It's a POS. It was a POS...

The school that occupies the rest of the building where I work apparently tripled or quadrupled the number of access points they're using. And they're all on "automatic" channel selection. It is no longer possible for me to have a 2.4GHz WLAN in my office.

question How do people buy music these days?

Apparently EMI withdrew its licensing for Grooveshark today, leaving it with no support from any of the major record labels. I'm not too interested in streaming music for myself, but I understand that it works perfectly well for a lot of people. I'd rather build a library of my own content...

I doubt many people are listening to a lot of orchestral music with Pandora. Audio compression artifacts are ridiculously easy to hear in recordings of brass instruments.

    Mozilla Thunderbird

The only Thunderbird Add-on I use regularly is one that syncs Thunderbird and Gmail contacts. I do find it ironic that there's no decent way to set up two-way calendar sync with outlook and gmail without paying for something-or-other, but I'm not a calendar-using person in any case. At any...

I purchase discs. I rip them to .flac if I can (SACDs can't be ripped unless I feel like blowing $400 on a Playstation 3 with a particular firmware revision). Actually I think I paid $209 for mine but I just got them from Newegg. Pretty sure it was in one of their daily emails a couple weeks ago. I've seen them for $199 in sales flyers from Best Buy so it's at least possible to get them that cheap.

problem Seagate GoFlex 4TB USB 3.0

$199 is a much better price than $349. The drives are simply part of the redundant storage pool on my NAS anyway. There isn't any content on them that is not duplicated at least three other places.

problem Seagate GoFlex 4TB USB 3.0

problem Seagate GoFlex 4TB USB 3.0

All the Seagate enclosures I've seen in recent memory are tamper proof so that they can't be disassembled without someone knowing about it. Since the warranty on Seagate drives is so short anyway, I don't think I'm giving much up by trashing the shitty enclosure.

    Remote Desktop Support

As I recall, LogMeIn is basically just an extension to VNC anyway. VNC is pretty much always going to be dreadful on anything that isn't at least 10Mbit. Even tightvnc is nothing like RDP in terms of responsiveness.

There WAS just a patch to RDP to fix a well-known vulnerability.
