    New BackBlaze Server build online

If you're building RAID5s or JBODs of consumer 5k SATA drives, I/O performance probably isn't on the top of the list.

That does not surprise me even a tiny little bit, based on my experiences with Hitachi drives in RAID generally, and with recent Seagate 5k drives in various types of arrays. The Hitachi drives are also the cheapest 3TB drives available right now. So that's working for them, too.

    Migrating to Gmail

Every Outlook user I still have to support would have strangled me for daring to have them look anyplace but Outlook for mail. The times I've done Gmail migrations, I came in and did the work on an 8PM to wee small hours of the morning schedule.

    Migrating to Gmail

Maybe the requirements are different for Google Oceania? I know they gave me instructions for accessing the Google Apps stuff without making any changes to DNS. I swear. Honest. I just don't know why time didn't get that. It's worrisome that his process is different from the one I'm familiar with.

    10 Year Anniversary for StorageForum

Yeah. That was the deal. SR came back up and basically Eugene said that he was going to shut it down. There was an article on Slashdot.org about its closure, even. There were some emails spread around among about a dozen people and then Handruin set up SF. We had ideas that we would take the...

    Migrating to Gmail

I've used that tool and found it to not work particularly well. It is absolutely possible to start a Gmail transition prior to changing MX records. They give you URLs for accessing your Google Apps stuff through google.com/somelongrandomstring if you want or need to do it that way.

    Migrating to Gmail

Oh, Outlook Contacts: AFAIK, the only time that syncing them natively is an option is under paid Google Apps with the Gmail Sync tool installed on client machines. That essentially turns Gmail into an Exchange replacement and also allows for Calendar sharing and some other stuff. There are some...

    Migrating to Gmail

I use Gmail contacts with Thunderbird as well. If you're dealing with Outlook, you may very well have issues with huge .pst migrations. I found the migration tools that were available to do an extremely poor job transferring data from desktop machines to Gmail. Moving folders via Outlook is...

    Decent USB Flash Drives

I find that there's a lot of variability even between drives that are theoretically the same model from the same manufacturer. I bought a dozen 4GB PNY Attache drives that I use for OS installation media and I've observed that some of them consistently install Windows 7 more slowly than others...

    New business machine baseline

The Gigabyte H61-USB3 is kind of a half-assed board. It performs well enough when paired with an i3, but I can tell that corners were cut to get to its price point. Even the packaging and manual are weak compared to the usual Gigabyte standards. And yes I stuck a PCI I/O card in it. It might...

I have an Aquos and don't have any particular complaints about it. I've never had to deal with their service department. SSDs - State of the Product?

My G1 X25-M is definitely near the end of its life. I cloned it and pulled it On top of that, one of my customers, the same one who had his 160GB X25-M die before, had his drive die again. I don't know what he's doing that kills them but at this point I suspect it's his fault rather than...

It's not like I know people who are still buying them. It's just that they've had them for 15 or 20 years and the damned things still work and cost (relatively speaking) nothing for consumables. I don't blame anyone for wanting to stuck with them. They're like the cockroaches of the printing...

    New business machine baseline

The Parallel port is close to a deal breaker. I've been telling customers for years that the best personal printers ever made are Laserjet 3s and a lot of them still have those old printers. IDE is far, far less important, but there's a convenience factor there for dealing with old machines...

    Cool Fan Idea

TrueImage 2010 definitely works with AHCI. I suppose it might not work with a Z68 6Gbps controller since that's not part of the standard ICHwhatever deal but AFAIK it's still a supported product and there's probably an update that addresses that. Over the weekend, I got an LG Smart TV Upgrader for $50. For that money it has some stupid apps (meh) and offers DLNA support for streaming video. I've since found the Seagate/WD streaming video doohickeys on Ebay for not much more than the LG, but it's another interesting option.

Sans Digital TR5UT-BP 5 drive RAID enclosure

I had horrible problems using 2TB Seagate green drives in Windows SoftRAIDs. I suspect there's something in the drive firmware that makes them a bad choice for RAID scenarios, like extra-long thermal calibrations or something.
