Microsoft using Linux, in a way...

I think we are living in a golden age of piracy now; I wouldn't expect it to continue unabated. First, Napster is taken down, then software activation appears in Office and Windows... it's only a matter of time until DRM becomes a part of our lives. I'm sure that the warez people will do their...

Got a 7200.7 when bought a Barracuda ATAIV.

I am noticing this as a general trend. Stores often neglect to update their webpages, and some aren't even aware of the 3 generations of drives appearing within the same year. Often, I will have to go to the store myself and inspect the drive before I tell them that this isn't a Cuda IV or V --...

    Windows 2000 SP4

D'oh! That reminds me. I have to slipstream SP4 into a whole new set of W2k CD's. Unfortunately, I forgot how to do it, so I have to muck around to find the instructions and read it before I do the deed :(

[NEWS] - SPAM cost 874$/year per employee

And besides, clearly, 6.5 minutes a day managing spam is clearly excessive for the amount of spam people actually receive. 6.5 minutes to manage 13.3 spam messages? It takes 30 seconds to delete each e-mail? How slow are these people? Do they actually read each one?

[NEWS] - SPAM cost 874$/year per employee

6.5 minutes a day managing spam? That's it? Hardly a problem. That's nothing compared to the amount of time they spend managing forwards (jokes, funnies, disgusting/freaky pics/links, etc.), personal e-mails, doing personal chores, surfing the web, watching their stock portfolio, checking the...

A camera with some serious zoom

Lunar, I see someone knows their photo equipment :) As you say, the image quality of my lenses are not that good... but I need convenience and practicality for traveling over image quality -- i.e., a single lens that could be used for 90% of the pictures that I would ever want to take on...

PW, have you tried myIE2? It takes the IE6 browsing engine and adds some of the best features from Mozilla and Opera (pop-up blocking, tabbed browsing, URL aliasing, mouse gestures).

    Browser Innovation

I would like it if someone combined the best (IMO) features of the available browsers -- URL aliasing, mouse gestures, tabbed browsing, pop-up blocking, image/cookie/form managment, and the IE browsing engine. So far, myIE2 has everything except for Moz's image/cookie/form management system...

Oh, perhaps I should indicate which SLR's and lenses I have in case some may be suggesting a digital SLR as well (looking for a P&S now, but an SLR will inevitably follow, given my initial (although very modest) investment in lenses. Canon EOS 10s + 35-135 USM lens... forgot the speed Nikon F70...

    CHEAP scanner advice

Oh, I should add that you should check the "cycle time" for the scanner if you can even find it. Taking 20 seconds to scan the image into your computer is only half of it. With scanners like the LiDE, you have to wait an equally long time for the scanner sensor to return to its starting position...

    CHEAP scanner advice

I recently purchased the LiDE 20. Despite the numerous glowing user and editorial reviews on the net, I cannot recommend it without slight reservations. This thing has a slow mechanism (especially on the return stroke -- why can't the thing move faster when it doesn't have anything to scan?)...

    New NForce Drivers

Well, the fact that nVidia don't even post the 2.41 drivers on their website leads me to believe that they are not too confident in their own drivers... which is disappointing, considering that I fled the Purveyors of Dodgy Southbridges and Buggy Drivers (aka VIA) for this...

    New NForce Drivers

Apparently, there are problems with the nVidia IDE drivers... they yanked them for the 2.42 set after some problems with IDE in the 2.41 set. I downloaded unofficial MSI-sourced 2.78 drivers recently; maybe I'll try those.
  27. E

    New NForce Drivers

No, it is not. Actually, I think the drivers on the nVidia website are 2.03, not 2.41

    New NForce Drivers

How do you get the nForce unified driver pack to install the IDE drivers? I have run the installer numerous times; every time after it finishes (and reboots), I check my Device Manager: it always shows Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE controller (built-in MS drivers).

Shuttle AK38N : 62.61$ shipped here, worth it?

... as I predicted :mrgrn: I usually get charged $25-35 brokerage fees + 7% GST + 8% PST on top of fairly high shipping charges for any shipment coming from the US regardless of which courier is being used. Granted, UPS does seem to have the highest brokerage fees and they do not release the...

Which components for a basic, high-reliability system?

Yes, Real is the devil (the company and the software), but I am finding that RealOne Player is actually better than WMP and especially QuackTime. QT... well, just being able to use one version -- any version -- without it crashing on me would be a pleasant surprise. This must be the 800th...

Which components for a basic, high-reliability system?

Indeed, the improved stability of ATI's Catalyst drivers have arguably allowed ATI to catch nVidia over the past year. If their drivers were slow and buggy as they have been historically, their superior hardware would have been wasted. I bought a Radeon 9500 Pro for my new box and find it does...

Which components for a basic, high-reliability system?

Thanks for the heads-up, Coug. Have you ordered from ExCaliberPC before? If so, what kind of additional fees were you charged? I am usually reluctant to order from the US due to the slow and expensive shipping, brokerage fees ($30), 8% PST (only have to pay GST when I order from BC), and...

Which components for a basic, high-reliability system?

Normally, I toss the HSF included with retail CPU's. They are a little noisy and inefficient compared to aftermarket HSF's. I don't have access to any Speeze stuff, but Merc swears by them. Apparently, they are more effective and quieter than the retail HSF's and pretty inexpensive to boot. I...

Which components for a basic, high-reliability system?

You don't need to have a loud fan just to indicate whether it is working or not. Most mobos have hardware monitoring that will trigger an alarm should one of the case/CPU fans drop below a certain RPM or one of the voltage rails deviate from their intended voltage.

Which components for a basic, high-reliability system?

My ASUS A7N266-VM has been excellent overall. My system not been as stable recently after installing a bunch of new drivers and patches for Office (Outlook seems to be crashing occasionally now, which it never did before). But since it was 100% stable for many months prior to this, I suspect...

    SMP in the modern age

Yeah, that is why Eugene revamped the IOMeter suites to use lower queue depths when he was still using IOMeter for desktop performance testing. Then came IPEAK, and a "new old fashioned" way of using typical application usage patterns (as Winbench did, although run at a lower level) to test...

    SMP in the modern age

What I meant to say was... ... but what is really happening is that disk I/O is definitely tying up the kernel (i.e., it is nothing to do with a rogue process, swapping, etc. ... although swapping implies disk I/O, the disk I/O is not from swapping, but rather from Winamp playing mp3's)
  45. E

    SMP in the modern age

Regarding perfmon, once you set up the counters you want, to recall it quickly for future use, save the settings in the MMC as perfmon1.msc (or whatever you want to call it). Then, when you want to run it in the future, just Run: perfmon1.msc.
  46. E

    SMP in the modern age

Run perfmon to monitor your CPU, memory, and disk usage. I just upgraded my Athlon 650 to an XP2200 + Soltek 75FRN2-L nForce 2 mobo. I am a little disappointed, to tell you the truth. My biggest performance problem is that I get these unresponsive "frozen CPU" periods where it seems like a rogue...

    headphone recommendations

A basic 10-band graphic EQ is pretty cheap and useful; I recommend you pick one up -- even if only to learn. Frequency response is the most important measurable and user-correctable characteristic of one's audio system. While a parametric EQ is ideal, even a graphic EQ does a decent job at...
