Doesn't the SCSI adaptor have to have the INT 13 bit set to make it bootable. Also, some SCSI adaptors must be told that they are bootable (this is done with the adaptors BIOS program). If it's RAID this is done after the array has been built. Bozo :mrgrn:

Just set up two Raptors in RAID 0. I used the Intel RAID setup on an Asus P4C-800E Deluxe motherboard. The best Atto scores are ~ 118M/sec writes and ~ 98M/sec reads. This is the fastest sytem I've ever worked on. Bozo :mrgrn:

You can boot from the Mavel controller without any addition cards. Just load the drivers during the OS install and set the BIOS boot order. Bozo :mrgrn:

I wonder if the way the drives show up is related to the controller. On Intel motherboards, they are 'native' and show up in the BIOS. On some other boards, the controller is an add-on and drivers must be loaded separately. On my Asus P4c800-E Deluxe, two of the SATA ports are connected to the...

I would suggest an Intel 915 motherboard. The SATA on these (4 ports) don't need extra drivers. Thinking about 1 boot drive (40GB?) and 3-300GB Seagate drive in RAID 0 (you said you are not worried about losing a drive :o ). That would give you 900GB. This can all be done with the motherboard...

Actually I'd still like to see 20GB high speed SATA or PATA hard drives. Maybe 10,000RPM and extreamly fast seek times. These would be great as boot drive or (in our case) only use about ~6-10 GB of space on a drive. Or, how about some quality and reliability? :-? Bozo :mrgrn:

Looks like a VIA problem. I have a WD SATA drive and a Hitachi PATA dive attached to a D865 Intel motherboard. Copying files from one to the other (either direction) only shows 8-12% CPU utilization. This is with XP, SP2 installed. The SATA drive shows up in device manager as an IDE device...

Most of the Dell I've worked on had a Maxtor drive in them. The drive was unusual in that it was only half as thick as a normal 3.5" drive. I presumed it was a 'contract' hard drive made for Dell. It was only 6 months old and failed. Fortunately, a standard hard drive fit in the slot. Bozo...

It made a difference on my P4 running Server 2003. I manually start each session after the computer boots up. The second session always failed to start the first time I tried to run it. After making it machine 2, it starts first time every time. Don't have an explanation for it. Bozo :mrgrn:

Also, make sure each session has it's own machine number in the config file. IE: machine 1, machine 2, etc. Bozo :mrgrn:

Usually the RAID setup is stored on the hard drives. Some of the better RAID cards have it on the cards. Bozo :mrgrn:

The one BIG item that has me looking at Adaptec rather than 3Ware is 3Wares problem reporting. 3Ware uses e-mail and Adaptec uses alerter service. Our network is isolated from 'the world' and contains no e-mail at all. If there is a problem with a hard drive on the 3Ware system, we woulldn't...
