Using wireless in brick & cement structures

We've installed a 'G' system in our plant. Lots of steel walls and equipment. Seems to work pretty good; better than we expected anyway. Range is about 100' depending on where you are. Connecting vertically seems to be a problem. IE: first floor to third floor through concrete floors. Bozo...

    Opinions on Ghost 9

Norton now owns Powerquest. I believe that Ghost is now Powerquest V2i. It works basically the same way. You must install it to make backups but can boot from CD to do a reinstall. Floppies are dead. You cannot make an image from the boot CD. Also, trying to get the CD to do a restore over the...

    Odd request

The corperate IT department has pretty much taken away all user options on our computers. One of them is the screensaver. It is permently set at 10 minutes with a blank sreen. Does anyone know of a program that would fake out the timer or make the OS (XP Pro) think the mouse is moving??? Or...

    Bigger Drives When?

I'm looing for hard drives at the other end of the spectrum. Most of our computers gather data and then forward it to the next process. The files are small so we don't need a lot of space. Most of our "file servers" only have 18GB SCSI hard drives in them. Most of that space is empty. What I...

    SCSI disappointment

"Is that an X15 or 15K.3? The X15 was only good for about 40 MB/sec. sustainer transfers." I believe it's one of each. I'll look into it Saturday. Bozo :mrgrn:

    SCSI disappointment

The Hitachi runs at 56MB/sec. About the fastest 'feeling' IDE drive I've seen in a while. Don't think it's on par with the SCSI though. Bozo :mrgrn:

    SCSI disappointment

Another annomoly is that Segates Seatools software cannot "see" the hard drives through the RAID adaptor. So much for checking the firmware settings. The 'feel' is very quick. But I don't think it's faster than a single X15 drive. Faster than IDE? I'll be able to test that as soon as I install...

    SCSI disappointment

Recently I added a Cheetah X15 to a computer. Ran ATTO and got best transfers of ~74MB/sec. I have since added a LSI Logic 21320-r RAID controller and another X15. I set it up as RAID 0 (stripping). I ran ATTO on the setup and the best I got was ~84MB/sec. I was expecting a lot higher numbers...

    Looking for a new MB

Interesting. The brief exposer I've had with VIA chipsets was on a Tyan motherboard. All 5 of them gave me nothing but grief. Most of it was driver/BIOS related if I remember correctly. The 4 Asus boards that I've installed went without a hitch. . And yes, they were pricy. (P4C800-E Deluxe?)...

    Looking for a new MB

I haven't had any problems with the few Asus boards I've bought. But, they were for Intel CPUs and used Intel chipsets. Maybe it's not so much Asus as it is the chipsets that they use, like VIA??? Bozo :mrgrn:

    can of worms

Most everything that goes into a production line PC is bought in bulk through the bid process. The PC manufacturer goes to each hard drive manufacturer and ask for a price for 10,000 40Gb, 7200RPM ( or whatever) hard drives. Lowest bid gets the contract. It's all done by the almighty dollar: it...

    Bad sectors

I seem to be experiancing a lot of hard drives with bad sectors lately. Some of the drives are only a few months old. All are under a year old. I'm seeing this on all makes of drives: Seagate, WD, & Maxtor. Could it be a side affect of the high densities that the drives are using on each...

    Poor cooling HDD selection...

You might want to look at the Antec fans that are temperature controlled. On a few cases I have used the Antec fan with the thermocouple attached to the hard drive, and the fan mounted on the back of the case. The fan runs just enough to keep things cool, but not fast enough to make a lot of...

80 MB/sec not enough on today's SCSI controllers?

Where I work, we have more than 300 computers. Because it's not automated, I'd bet that 99% of them have not been defragged in 2 years. On the occasion that I'm ask to look at a computer that is performing poorly (I'm not in IT) I find letting defrag run over night (it usually takes that long)...

80 MB/sec not enough on today's SCSI controllers?

A couple of years ago I built 13 file servers. The files were small, but there was a lot of I/O. Most files needed to be sent across a 100Mb network that could easily be saturated with the latest IDE drive. We wanted redundancy, but didin't need tons of hard drive space. I used 18GB Cheetah...
