I do the usual before an upgrade: Clean out the crap, run defrag, run scandisk. Haven't had any problems on the few boxes I've installed it on. But! don't be in a hurry as it's a long process. Bozo :mrgrn:

The Hitachi runs at 56MB/sec. About the fastest 'feeling' IDE drive I've seen in a while. Don't think it's on par with the SCSI though. Bozo :mrgrn:

Another annomoly is that Segates Seatools software cannot "see" the hard drives through the RAID adaptor. So much for checking the firmware settings. The 'feel' is very quick. But I don't think it's faster than a single X15 drive. Faster than IDE? I'll be able to test that as soon as I install...

Recently I added a Cheetah X15 to a computer. Ran ATTO and got best transfers of ~74MB/sec. I have since added a LSI Logic 21320-r RAID controller and another X15. I set it up as RAID 0 (stripping). I ran ATTO on the setup and the best I got was ~84MB/sec. I was expecting a lot higher numbers...

Interesting. The brief exposer I've had with VIA chipsets was on a Tyan motherboard. All 5 of them gave me nothing but grief. Most of it was driver/BIOS related if I remember correctly. The 4 Asus boards that I've installed went without a hitch. . And yes, they were pricy. (P4C800-E Deluxe?)...

I haven't had any problems with the few Asus boards I've bought. But, they were for Intel CPUs and used Intel chipsets. Maybe it's not so much Asus as it is the chipsets that they use, like VIA??? Bozo :mrgrn:

I seem to be experiancing a lot of hard drives with bad sectors lately. Some of the drives are only a few months old. All are under a year old. I'm seeing this on all makes of drives: Seagate, WD, & Maxtor. Could it be a side affect of the high densities that the drives are using on each...

You might want to look at the Antec fans that are temperature controlled. On a few cases I have used the Antec fan with the thermocouple attached to the hard drive, and the fan mounted on the back of the case. The fan runs just enough to keep things cool, but not fast enough to make a lot of...

Where I work, we have more than 300 computers. Because it's not automated, I'd bet that 99% of them have not been defragged in 2 years. On the occasion that I'm ask to look at a computer that is performing poorly (I'm not in IT) I find letting defrag run over night (it usually takes that long)...

One other thing to consider: 95% of all desktop users never defrag their hard drives. The better the seek time, the less impact this has on performance loss. Bozo :mrgrn:

A couple of years ago I built 13 file servers. The files were small, but there was a lot of I/O. Most files needed to be sent across a 100Mb network that could easily be saturated with the latest IDE drive. We wanted redundancy, but didin't need tons of hard drive space. I used 18GB Cheetah...

Maybe two questions..... Every new case that you buy has a I/O shield installed on the back of the case. Has anyone ever found it to be the correct one for the motherboard they are installing??? :-? Every power supply has a connector on it that has one red, two orange, and three black wires...

Generaly when ask about problems with a computer, I ask if anything AOL is installed. If it is, I suggest they format and re-install, without AOL. Then I get the 'you're an idiot' Oh well. Eventually, I usually end up doing a format and re-install. Bozo :mrgrn:
