The few SATA computers that I have put together have had SATA support on the motherboard. (Intel and ASUS; D865 & D875 chipsets) No special drivers were needed as everything was taken care in the BIOS. A couple of computers were built with 3Ware SATA RAID cards. You needed to load drivers...

I guess my expectations were too high. I tested a WD400JB and it averages 49 MB/sec. Thought the SCSI drives would smoke it. The X15 did, but I was expecting over 100MB/sec. But, the better access times seem to make up for the slower speeds. This is more of a percieved 'feel' than hard numbers...

I also had a Promise Fasttrak card that sucked donkey balls. But I have used about a dozen Promise Ultra 100 cards without a problem. Still don't trust Promise though. Bozo :mrgrn:

I tyried a Seagate X15 on this setup. Getting~ 73MB/sec. Seems slow. (for an X15) Bozo :mrgrn:

I purchase a LSI Logic 'LSIU160' and the SCSI cable from Newegg. I've attached a Seagate Barracuda ST39236LC to the cable/controller combo. After getting everthing setup, I ran ATTO. Seems the best this drive can do is ~25MB/sec. Seagate specs say I should get 40MB/sec or 80/160 in LVD mode. I...

I attached a cage to an Adaptec AHA 2940UW and everything works. The drives were assigned numbers and recognized by the SCSI card. Seems each slot in the cage has a permanent number assigned to it. Cool :) Bozo :mrgrn:

I salvaged two drive cages from a couple of Compaq servers. The removable drive carriers are marked 'Wide-Ultra'. Antec makes a kit to help with noise reduction. The kit contains a rubber like material to mount fans and power supply with. These are pre-cut. It also contains longer mounting screws with rubber washers. Basically this kit isolates the fans and power supply from the case. Bozo :mrgrn:

XP has builtin UPS management. A serial cable connects the UPS with the PC. You can set the PC to shutdown after a specific time. You can also have it run a batch file to shutdown other PCs on your network. MS supplies an 'shutdown.exe' file if you search their site. Don't know about Linux Bozo...

I can't argue about the performance between AMD and Intel. But the reliability issue is what I'm concerned with. I've never had an Intel computer come back for motherboard, cpu, or memory problems. They come back for hard drive, software, or chair to keyboard interface problems. The 3 computers...

As long as the temperature does not go to extreams, you should be fine. What might be worse is humidity and critters. Hot and cold are fine, but hot and damp or cold and damp are a no-no. Bugs and mice love computers and electrical equipment. Bozo :mrgrn:

Have to agree with CougTek. I've almost always bought Intel motherboards. Never had a problem with any flavour of RAM (Crucial, Kingston, Corsair). Once these systems were setup they were forgotten about. About the only times I look at them is for normal maintenance. I guess you get what you pay...

If you have a SCSI adaptor that is U320 and supports RAID 0, is there any performance gain using U320 hard drives? Wouldn't the card be maxed out with 1 U320 drive? Do you need a dual channel card with one drive on each channel? (presumming each channel is U320 each) It would seem the total for...
