    Quad-core Opterons in 2006 (H1)

AMD should skip DDR2 entirely and jump to DDR3 for its next interface. It is a better memory design. And I hate to say it, but lots of memory bandwidth with fewer pins could be done with another type of not-yet-dead technology : rambus. I think they are behind the XDR RAM used in one of the...

    Quad-core Opterons in 2006 (H1)

Exactly what I thought. I've almost stopped my folding contribution because my processors were both too old and took too much space altogether, so I wasn't competitive for the trouble that having 5 boxes running 24x7 brought me. But if I could get 8 highly efficient cores sitting into a single...

NEWZ: Maxtor's *500* GB Hard Drives

The PR doesn't say which product line the 500 gagabytes drive will be part of (DiamondMax or MaxLine). I'd like to know the advertised access time and the POH rating too. Thanks for the news Baby.

What do you think about LitePC : XPlite?

I'm talking about this XPlite. The way I see it, it's a tweaking tool, not a complete OS, so I still have to own a separate copy of WinXP and then apply the XPlite miraculous diet to remove MSFT trans fat from the OS. It's not very expensive (40$ per copy, less if many copies are purchased)...

GM Employee Discount for Everyone until July 5th

Oh shit, I'm tired. I meant "behing the wheel" And I agree with Clocker on one thing : current and upcoming GM cars are way better than their lineup from ~2001. The chassis (Delta and Epsilon) are a lot sturdier than those they replaced. I remember the lemons that were the past generation...

GM Employee Discount for Everyone until July 5th

The most interesting GM vehicule to my eyes is the Saab 9-3. It's probably the safest car GM builds. It's one of the very few that scored a good rating on both the frontal AND lateral impact tests from the IIHS. It also has AWD and various traction and stability electronic systems, so its...

GM Employee Discount for Everyone until July 5th

I don't see any promotion like that on their Canadian web site. United States of America isn't everyone in America. There's a world outside your borders, you know. What's the typical GM employee discount? 15%?

Western Digital's RMA are fine in Québec.

I asked for an advanced replacement for a defective WD400JB through their web site and the drive arrived just two days later. Dunno about their service elsewhere on the globe but here, it cannot be better. I see no reason to complain about them.

Apple to announce switch to Intel procs on Monday

A BIG mistake IMO. I thought they had plans going on about releasing dual-core G5 processors. This would have been awesome. Since the 2.5GHz G5 have been out and also because of MAC OSX 10.4 "Tiger", I've been somewhat tempted to make the switch or at least buy a PowerMAC system to try it...

    Ice Ages & such

Yeah, but with Lake Toba's supervolcano, we're talking about a magma chamber around a thousand time larger than the one of the original Krakatoa. I'm not aware of any supervolcano that blew twice within less than 100,000 years. Their cycles are more around half a million years. So people...

Gaming system: does hte CPU matter anymore?

The most interesting low cost CPU right now is the socket-939 version of the Athlon 64 3000+. Ok, it only runs at 1.8GHz, but it's made on the 90µm process and is easily overclockable. It's cheaper than the 3200+ too.

    Ice Ages & such

Lake Toba exploded 74000 years ago. I don't think it had the time to refil its magma chamber nearly enough to re-produce a super-volcano-like cataclysm just yet. Super volcanoes have very long cycles and 74000 years is quite short for one to recharge. There might be well enough magma out...

That's what I thought I heard, but the number was so ridiculously high that I figured it must have been a mistake. Think again. The wave should be 400 kilometers long. While it won't penetrate that far inland because it will decelerate a lot when it'll hit the coast, be sure that it will at...
