    Building a Storage Server Thread

The rackmount enclosures I've seen at NewEgg (the SuperMicro one's) cost 220$-250$. For a 1500$ system, or even a 2000$ one, it is dangerously expensive. So despite the PCI bottleneck for the Escalade, an i-875P-based motherboard with gagabit ethernet seems the way to go for a budget server...

    Fedora Core 1 critical article

To avoid cable clutter and reduced air flow. 4x or 6x PATA cables (to have one drive per channel) is going to create quite a mess inside a normal enclosure. Regarding the chassis, would this do?

    More critical patches from MS

Thanks, I didn't notice them earlier. They've been installed and my computer didn't explode, so I assume they worked.

    Building a Storage Server Thread

The main problem I see for a cheap storage server is the lack of faster PCI slots in budget motherboards. It doesn't take a lot of modern hard drives working simultaneously to reach the bandwidth cap of the old 32bit PCI bus. So a 3Ware Escalade into such a slot is partially wasted...

    Review of new Toyota Prius

Thanks. I will go to the Montréal auto show in January to look and sit in it. Right now, my budget prefers the Corolla (it doesn't consume much more fuel). My car seems to work ok for the moment, so I might not change this year, even if I'm tempted. Next time it breaks though, bye bye for...

[NEWS] - Building a budget storage server

With the above I disagree. There's no need for rackmount for a budget system, even a server app. Rackmounts are needed when there are space constraints, which shouldn't be the case here. Not that I approve the use of a modified case either... In their defense, I want to point out that at...

Figuring out the graphic card universe...need for a database

An idea to simplify our task would be to contact via e-mail each company (still in business) and tell them we are doing an article on the history of graphic cards and chipset and that, since we feel that given company brought some important contributions to the evolution of computer graphics, we...

[NEWS] - Building a budget storage server

I saw this article at Firingsquad. Haven't read it thoroughly, but since it's "storage" related, good or bad, it should be linked here. Overall, their proposed system cost more than 3400$ and IMO looks more like an enthusiast box than a dedicated server (Logitech MX700???). It would work...

Overall, I would say that it depends on the Pentium 4 revision you have. Sure, some application always run faster on P4 and others on Athlon due to software optimisation (or lack of). [News] Fedora Core 1 Released

I wouldn't try to install WinXP on a box with a scant 64MB of RAM. 128MB would be the bottom-of-the-pit amount IMO. I think I've seen two computers a few months ago with WinXP installed on Celeron 433MHz/64MB or 96MB RAM systems, but it was so slow that they would qualify for "unusable" status.
