One of the reasons I might not be seeing issues is my practice of using softRAID rather than relying on the specific features of a given controller. Software RAID5/6 in my experience is fast enough for what I want to do with it, which is store gargantuan amounts of data in a fault tolerant fashion. If you'd like, I can run some tests to see what write speeds look like on a four or five drive Windows softRAID5.
