Android 2.2 is being pushed out over the air for the EVO now. I'm told that it breaks a few things, but fixes a memory leak and improves battery life somewhat.

I'm generally building computers that I can sell for $350. That's pretty low end.

Hard Freezes (No BSOD) - Not RAM, how to diagnose?

You have a power supply that's testing bad in a big, big way that's very easy to verify. You really need to double check that first. And then blame that Western Digital hard drive.

    Anyone Building AMD Systems?

I can justify the slight additional cost of the Intel-based system because of the somewhat more robust Intel-branded motherboards and generally lower power consumption. With USB3 on AMD but not Intel, I might look again, but given my audience, I doubt it's much of a selling point right now.

Windows 7 greener than WinXP for desktops

It wouldn't surprise me. If nothing else, power saving modes are enabled by default in 7 that are not in XP.

    Anyone Building AMD Systems?

I usually deal with budget systems, but AMD stuff has been off my radar for at least a couple years. Coug and Tannin are probably AMD people though.

    O&O Server Defrag deal!

The places where having "Server" Windows makes any kind of practical difference to your computing experience are pretty minimal. Antivirus software is probably the only one most people would notice.

I'd say the larger issue was the humidity. My parents live on top of a mountain overlooking the valley comprising Alcoa and Maryville. Their front porch includes a vista of the Great Smoky Mountains. The sun and moon rise through the peaks. So that was nice. I'll get back to you about enjoying...

Well... maybe. I'm great at lecturing and answering questions, but I can honestly say that does not work for the way everyone learns. My co-workers mix up for individual exercises and crap that I can't be bothered to do. I drove to Knoxville over the weekend to see my parents. The cost of...

Most of the stuff I teach is stuff that I genuinely, hard-core KNOW. But in a lot of cases, I do want my notes handy because my notes usually have the best foundation I've found for explaining a topic to someone else. This is really important if I'm lecturing on, oh, encryption technologies or...

    Android: The Legend Begins

How about a barcode reading program? I realize it's been done, but it seems useful and non-trivial and there's probably all sorts of goofy applications that could spring from that.

    Cable modem

I'm in the camp that it doesn't matter most of the time. The cable modem is going to get whatever programming it needs from your ISP and that's going to set your cap. I don't think you're going to see download speeds in excess of 100Mbps any time soon, especially not on consumer cable services...

Best hardware solution for RAIDless storage (20+ drives)

You're taking lots of risks. Power failure, hardware failure, human error, some kind of security compromise... Moving to multiple systems has down sides in terms of ease of administration and obviously greater costs for hardware, but I think it's worthwhile to gain some redundancy. Personally...

SAS expanders can be internal cards or external boxes. They use a single cable connection from your SAS HBA to add X connections to your SAS bus. There's an internal card from HP that's pretty popular with hobbyists, for example. Unless you deal with Enterprise storage in your day job, you're...

    Essential Firefox plug-ins for Netbooks

Best hardware solution for RAIDless storage (20+ drives)

You can stick a couple Dell Perc5s in a system. That gives you the ability to handle 16 drives for around $200. I actually do something similar, synchronizing around 19TB of data across two sets of file servers with rsync, but I do keep my data in a software RAID6 with hot spares.

Fastest way to share files between VM & Host?

The only comment I can make here is that I've likewise found NFS to be slower than SMB, regardless of implementation or platform. Windows, or at least Server 2008, does seem to be faster than Samba for file transfers. NIC teaming on Windows is mostly a function of drivers rather than an OS...
