PC Gaming = World of Suck

Until I can de-couple the games from Steam, and until they tell me exactly what data they're collecting about me and my activities, it meets my definition of malware. I'm sorry, but I don't want that on my computer. I do have a Steam account that I use to send legal copies of games to other...

    Cheap, small, light netbook?

I have four Thinkpad X201 tablets on my desk right now. 8GB RAM, 2.13GHz i7 CPUs, ultra-bright screen, six hour battery, 3.5lb. weight. Not exactly affordable, but after spending the morning with an Acer Aspire, I certainly am glad that not everyone wants a $300 portable computer.

PC Gaming = World of Suck

I had Half Life 2. I have used Steam to give away game codes I've gotten from buying hardware, but I do that on their web site. I'm not going to install their client until I'm sure I can uninstall it without impacting any of the games I want to play.

Apparently gog.com died over the weekend. That is really too bad. I was really hoping they would continue to grow and to suck less than Steam.

    little linux file system help

Well, dd /if=/dev/[whatever the disk device or array is] conv=noerror, sync | bzip2 > blah.bz2 Would in theory make a complete copy of the array, presuming there's a USB drive or something big enough to hold blah.bz2. Then maybe you can run debugfs against that.

    Affordable graphics cards

That's still a teensy bit lame without sound though, isn't it? At this point I kind of wish I could have a 1080p tablet to be a remote control for my HTPC. Maybe that new AMD IGP will get us there.

4K sector drives and RAID cards

Knowing how Enterprise hardware is, I sincerely doubt they'll bother to fix any potential issue with 4k clusters for anything short of a new product line. Hobbyists aren't exactly the target market for serious RAID cards, and the people who are the target market probably aren't upgrading their...

Zombie processes on an RDP server?

They say it should run fine on Server 2003 as long as it's 32 bit. I don't have another Server 2003 machine to test and they've got deeply obnoxious copy protection in place so I can't even set up a test environment (and in fact, the copy protection is the whole reason they need RDP to begin...

Zombie processes on an RDP server?

I agree. I wanted to implement their setup as XP VMs back when I set it up, but they have a quarter-IT guy on site (he's also their electrician, plumber and diesel mechanic, if that gives any indication what I'm dealing with) who was afraid he wouldn't be able to handle that setup.

Zombie processes on an RDP server?

As near as I can tell, yes to both. Seems to happen if I VNC into the console rather than RDP in. So I don't think it's specifically the result of it being RDP. I'm just trying to make sure I've got my ass covered before I start pointing fingers at the developer.

Zombie processes on an RDP server?

I have a Windows Server that a client is using for remote access to a particular application. Most of the time it's completely fine, but when they run certain reports, RAM utilization balloons by 700MB per report and that RAM is not released when they exit the app or when they disconnect/log...

Are the high-capacity Seagate drives still having issues?

I can say with absolute certainty that the 5400rpm 2TB Seagate drives don't like being in arrays, though I suspect that wasn't their intended application to begin with. I've had one out of eight 1.5TB 7200rpm drives fail in 10 months and two out of 16 1.5TB FreeAgent drives I've purchased have...

In your case the issue is that you would actually give serious consideration to buying something like that. A machine like that is basically only necessary for some kind of ridiculous database or high-volume E-mail server, or as a massive collection of VMs. A guy I know on another forum uses...

    Cheap, small, light netbook?

Most of the really low end ones have ARM CPUs and run Android or Windows Mobile. They're real. K-mart (no, really) had a $150 tablet about three weeks ago. Most stores sold out right away and they don't expect to get more. I suspect there will be a few decent low-cost competitors to the...

Ugly. I was thinking of something more like a dual Xeon 5680 setup with 192GB RAM, a RAID10 of X25-Es and 24TB or so of local storage on some kind of decent SAS controller. Spend a bit to get some silent cooling and redundant PSUs as well. I'm sure an ATI 5970 will cover graphics adequately...

Which Apple laptop is the least shitty?

It's about getting the applications and workflow the creative-types actually want to use. I very carefully did not say that Windows does not have applications that do the same things. Audio production is an area where Apple's OS has the advantage for creative types. That is not incorrect. MBPs probably suck less, but I doubt it's worth what what they cost to her. She'll wind up using external hardware for all the things she'll be doing so I'm not sure a notebook is the right...
