Greg, I'll be happy to hook you up with an ISO of whatever you need. You're on your own for a product key though.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I thought it was well-known that T and R61s are 1.5Gbps-only. I might be wrong but that fact was mentioned in a large number of notebook-based reviews for SSDs a couple years back. As I recall Dell and Apple notebooks of that vintage also had a 1.5Gbps limitation. One of my T61s has a 1st-gen...

    Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution premier

I have basically the same problem. I have veggies but don't eat nearly enough of them. I *think* my biggest dietary problem is actually salt. Pretty much all restaurant food and most prepared, packaged food are way, way high in sodium. I've gotten a lot better about making choices with lower...

    iPod>iPhone>iPad

Turns out my ex bought one. So I do know someone who owns one. Since she has an uncanny ability to screw up Windows computers with malware, I kind of support her if it means less working on her other machines. Unfortunately, the reason I know she got one is that a bunch of things she wanted...

    Laptop with Warranty and RS-232

There was a thread on Slashdot a few months back complaining about the lack of serial ports on modern hardware, but honestly, they're only used for specialized applications at this point, and that space is better spent on more USB ports or display outputs or something. The only other input I...

It's flash memory. It either holds data or it doesn't. Yeah, I bought one. 128GB is enough to hold all my prepared install images on one drive.

    128GB Pen Drives

There seem to be a number of Ebay sellers offering 128GB pen drives for $20 - $30 at the moment. I'm not sure what the scam is, or whether there is a scam, but since those drive normally retail north of $250, I thought I'd share it with you all. Here's a sample auction. There are others.

    Mini Wireless keyboard

I got my mini wireless keyboard over the weekend. It works as advertised to a range of somewhere between 15 and 20 feet. It really is as small as it looks, about the size of a cell phone with a QWERTY keyboard plus a little for the touchpad. The device is lightweight but does not feel...

PC Gaming = World of Suck

I'm thinking I need to build a retro-gaming machine. Something with Windows 98 and a 4:3 monitor. I can play a lot of games I like in DOSBox or something similar, but a lot of late-90s titles have just enough 3D that they won't run in a VM and either hate NT-based Windows or have restrictions on...

The HD2 has a bigger screen. It's thinner, lighter and faster. The only thing that would make me consider that hardware would be the hard keyboard, but that's something I explicitly don't want for myself.

    Windows 7 nonsense

I just got my copy of Windows 7, the Missing Manual. I sincerely doubt anyone here actually needs it or anything like it, but holy cow is it fantastic as a guide for the non-nerds of the world. Totally, completely recommend the book if helping people with Windows 7 is something you have to do.

Most recent system for Windows NT4.

VMware might not be the best solution if, for example, the machine needs to run some dedicated process control hardware. I have customers with machines that still need DOS and ROX (obscure realtime OS that installs from two 3.5" floppies), respectively, to run something they do. Anyway, get...

Opera 10.5: a PR disaster in progress

Something like 60% of guests and commentators on NPR programs are explicitly right of center. Lots of Cato Institute and American Enterprise Institute talking heads wind up on NPR. Thinkpads also use magnetic connections for quick-release, so that extra play might be part of the overall design. I think the idea is to prevent a snagged cord from causing a notebook to take a tumblel the cord just pops out instead. Again, it's a tiny detail but it makes a huge difference.

Opera 10.5: a PR disaster in progress

That's fine, until you want to have the content of more than one list. I use four subscriptions (two for mainstream ads and two more for adult content). and all of them are updated regularly. People DO want ad blocking. They want it from the moment they become aware of it. I've seen this first...

As I understand it, the phone companies are there now. They've adjusted their thinking from "circuits" to "packets" and the engineers doing the work do know what they're doing. QoS is hard. It needs to operate in both directions, and involves the cooperation not just of the communication...

Opera 10.5: a PR disaster in progress

Opera has a lot of things I'd consider half-finished ideas. In a couple cases, I can see the use (the zoom feature, for example), but a lot of the other things, I either don't see the appeal (gestures, the built-in web server) or don't think the tool is useful enough (Opera's content blocking).

Opera 10.5: a PR disaster in progress

It's deeper than that. Adblock Plus is subscription based, meaning that every time the maintainer updates the block list, ABP updates, too. So as more ad servers are brought online, ABP kills those ads. Opera can import a block list, but doesn't check for updates. As I recall, the process of...
