    Something Random

I took a huge pay cut last year at my salaried job. I have no benefits or retirement plan. I love the job I have; it's well-suited to my skills and talents, but I hate where I live and I'm not sure how much longer my company can stay afloat given current conditions anyway. Last night someone...

    Low power 2TB options?

Newegg reviewers generally aren't people you should listen to about anything. They don't buy enough parts to have any basis for evaluation. Some guy gets a drive damaged in shipping or fucks up a motherboard he's never tried to use in a build, and he gives it a bad review. If I see 300 people...

    Firefox 3.5 is out.

That's light for me. Some of my machines have had some of the same tabs open since before Firefox 2.0 was released. 80 - 100 open tabs is not atypical. Over the holidays I went around and did what I was meaning to do with those tabs on a lot of machine so that I could actually close them. This...

    Firefox 3.5 is out.

And after a reboot and reload of all 44 tabs, Firefox memory use jumped as high as 460MB during mass page load and dropped to 320MB once all the tabs finished loading. So there's an issue there somewhere.

    Firefox 3.5 is out.

Hm. On the other hand, Firefox is using 1.3GB of RAM on the machine I'm sitting at and I only have about 50 open tabs. That seems a touch excessive, especially since I just rebooted a couple weeks ago.

Best practice for archiving DVD for future media center?

Generally speaking, I convert BDs and DVDs to fairly high bit-rate MP4 or .mkvs with Handbrake or Nero Vision (Vision seems to be faster, Handbrake has tons more options for quality), or RipBot264 for BDs. I preserve special features and store them with the main movie file and attach director's...

    iPhone syndrome

I've heard basically nothing about the HD3, except some stuff that links back to one Chinese site. HTC usually does refresh its phones annually, so it's certainly possible. In the US that phone is only available to T-mobile (and I guess ATT if they wanted to swap a SIM card). The CDMA version...

    Lowest $ cell/internet service

The overall lowest standard 500 minute + 5GB/month plan is T-mobile. IIRC they offer something at $39.95 a month. There was a chart on Consumerist.org about that last week. All Windows Mobile phones that offer 802.11 can be made to act as access points through a program called WMWifiRouter...

I did in fact blow the tea I was sipping out my nose when I heard "ipad." Now I have to clean tea off my Thinkpad. :\ Anyway, Apple is releasing a seriously misguided overlarge cell phone with a hilarious name. I'm interested in this. I'm really more partial to Windows Mobile, but a 4.3" OLED...

    I hate Linux! (v. Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS + RAID-1 + Encryption + LVM)

I've been using Linux softRAID a lot longer than that. It's worked beautifully for years, though LVM wasn't particularly polished and I don't think there was much in the way of install-time support for it.

The fact that it's a Sony computer product means that it's oriented toward consumers, since they don't have a business computer unit to begin with. I don't go on vacations. When I was with my ex I generally couldn't afford it or she couldn't take time off school anyway. The girls I know will point attractive women out to me and talk about their lives a lot more frankly than maybe a guy wants to hear. It's a stereotype, but most of my...

Slackware is VERY Unix-traditional. It's probably not a good choice for someone who doesn't want to invest time in really getting to know the Unix way of doing things. Personally, I use Centos on my home Linux servers, but my configuration at this point is pretty bare-bones. I've been using...

I couldn't begin to tell you what the issue might be with that. I'm not an Ubuntu fan. It has too many Debian cooties (Debian people being the FSF "It has to be GNU/Linux and not just Linux" morons). Hopefully you made a partition for /home and another for everything else. Anyway, if you...

    Fancy i7 cooling

Well, the Zipang 2 is definitely silent. It's also parallel to the plane of the motherboard, so there's no uncertainty about which position or orientation I should use for the fan. It does overhang my DIMM slots more than I'd like, but I can reach under it, so it's not a big deal. Not bad for $35.

Acer does not fit. Ever. Toshiba has business products and business support, but their business products are still too crappy to merit consideration. It sounds like the Gigabyte adapter is barely supported in the first place. The PCI cards I buy (here in the US) are low-profile cards made by Syba. They retail for US$14. Generally, I find myself connecting older HP laser printers to them, but other than remembering which driver I need to...
