To free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact messages.

This of course leads to the obvious question of why you're using Outlook in the first place, but I'm guessing it's because of the poor judgment of your employer or someone in your IT department rather than personal preference.

To free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact messages.

    1. Why doesn't Outlook do that itself? 2. Why not use Google Desktop? It seems to have less of a performance penalty. Personally I wouldn't install Google Desktop, either, but Windows Search seems to be part of the path to maddening slowness on Vista and Windows 7, let alone behaviors like this.

Does Windows search do anything useful, ever? I don't understand why anyone would voluntarily install it.

Maybe uninstall Windows Search? It's an optional component and you can get the same functionality from Google Desktop if you actually use it.

I can top that. I submitted an RMA request to Axiontech for a Hauppauge USB PVR doohickey about three and a half years ago since, according to Hauppauge, I was supposed to return it to the store rather than the company. Eventually I contacted Hauppauge directly and got a new doohickey, but...

.NET Cleanup tool. Maybe it's just me, or maybe Microsoft totally sucks, but .NET 3.5 installs seem to fail about two out of three times I do them. I've found this program to be helpful in dealing with that. People who bitch about Linux being dependency hell have clearly never had to put up...

Technically, there's a right way to do that, but I've not invested the time in figuring out how it works. What you're really supposed to do is use the OEM Preinstall Kit to set up things like AHCI/RAID-mode devices so that Windows can recognize them. Now that I've actually done that procedure...

WD did make SCSI drives. As I recall they gave it up in 1998 or so. Why go inflict their shit on another market when the only place they enjoy any positive reputation is with home users who don't know any better?

Yes. From what I've read, there are in fact "blue pill" rootkits now that can infect all the systems being managed by a single hypervisor. I don't think normal people are going to be running across that kind of thing any time soon, though.
