PC Gaming = World of Suck

Mechwarrior 2 was set in Clan Space in the lead up to the 3050 Clan Invasion of the Inner Sphere. The mechs involved were a mix of Clan Omnimechs and second line mechs that were re-imagined designs based on Archetypal mechs, e.g. Marauder IIc instead of the (illegal for them to use because some...

    Another legend has passed.

I do remember seeing him on the CBS Evening News, though I was obviously not very old at the time. CBS had a whole stable of those quiet, dignified news men, completely at odds with the standards of shrill and acrimonious modern TV news presenters.

Dammit, uda posted a headline and I had to read it. Also, tl;dr version: Go learn English someplace else Longer version: Apostrophe S ('s) is a contraction for [it] is, or an indicator of singular possession. Most nouns in English can be made plural by adding an "s" to the end. When...

    AMD, Seagate demo SATA 6Gbps

For reference, attaining 750MB/sec data rates would require 24 total PCIe lanes. PCI-X tops out at IIRC 4Gb/sec. I've never even seen anything with an Infiniband interface. I know they exist, but that's the only thing I know that could keep up with a 6Gb/sec connection.

Generally speaking, if I'm motivated to buy a movie, I'd prefer to have the HD version. If I don't care enough to buy it on BD, I'm probably just going to get the disc from Netflix and if I think I might watch it again I'll just rip it.

PC Gaming = World of Suck

The best of the Mechwarrior games were really the first two. And for what it's worth, I like the software rendering better than GLide or DirectX in the first one. One thing that struck me as I watched that video for Mechwarrior 5 was that the real-time graphics in that were better than the...

    Thoughts about educational systems

Here's my main thought on education in the USA: Secondary Schooling (high school) needs to be longer, with a second degree awarded for completion of a full six years of schooling. Associate's Degrees are largely not worth the paper they are printed on. Jobs that 20 years ago did not require a...

    Thoughts about educational systems

Most high profile schools weight "legacy" applicants very, very heavily, since successful parents are also likely to be big donors once their kids get in. SSDs - State of the Product?

Dual Xeons have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with your storage setup. Given an X25E I could put together an Intel Atom-based system in a PC that's slightly larger than a pack of cigarettes that would smoke your dual Xeons + X15s. You're conflating CPU performance with storage subsystem performance...

Also, Greg: NO ONE WHO POSTS AT SF - NOT ME, NOT DDRUEDING, NOT LUNARMIST OR HANDRUIN OR TIMWHIT, NEEDS A XEON-BASED SYSTEM AT HOME. STR is not normally a huge part of a typical user's workload.
