    Everything Search Engine

I don't ever need to search for files. I'm anal-retentive about putting things where they belong so I don't have to. Email, maybe, but even then it's unlikely. Even though I keep every message I have in my inbox I can usually narrow down date and sender that searching isn't an issue.

    Browsers speed compared

There are some very heavily used web sites that do a lot of heavy lifting with Javascript. A Yahoo mail or Google Maps session is probably something a browser developer would find it worthwhile to optimize.

I *finally* get my car back today, if I can make it to the body shop before it closes. CarMax had records of having removed the front bumper during its initial inspection of my car, so they figure the mechanic just forgot to put that piece back in. Which is kind of scary on its own. I bought...

MSDN/MSDNAA/Action Pack subs list product keys for Home Basic/Home Premium/Business/Ultimate without regard for x86/x64. If somebody needs an .ISO, just shoot me a message and I'll plop it up on FTP. You're on your own for a key, though.

    CRYSTAL BALL ON LCDS?

Displays are going to get thinner and offer higher contrast ratios in the near future. We'll start to see large OLEDs sooner or later, and in entertainment-size screens we're going to see network-aware displays that can handle internet streaming video (probably Flash/Silverlight, rather than...

    Gateway P-6301 drivers for XP?

If you look on the bottom of that notebook you'll probably find a Compal part number. You might have an easier time if you can equate your Gateway to either a generic Compal design or with a Sager or similar "generic" notebook from a vendor with better download support. I've found it easier to...

I drove to Detroit to have lunch with a friend/former student today. My shitty rental car DID get 34 MPG, which was almost but not quite enough to make the trip on one tank of gas. It probably would have been able to do it if that particular vehicle had cruise control. I didn't even know it's...

I don't have any idea whom to believe. These shitheads have had my car two months and supposedly put $8000 worth of parts and labor in it. Are they trying to scam for even more money? I had a clean car history report and a national used car chain that supposedly has a certified inspection...

Well, my car is "done" but I just got a call that my car is missing the interior reinforcement for the front bumper. Not all GHz are created equal. Not all motherboard logic is created equal. Some of the things that are done as a matter of course on desktop boards aren't even possible on workstation/server boards. More than that, Greg, YOU DON'T NEED THAT STUFF AT HOME. You're not going to generate a...

Has Intel ever made any effort to simplify its product offerings? I knew i5s were coming and with them hopefully some cheaper motherboards. No one but Intel has a license to make LGA1366 motherboards. I suspect they're going to be expensive for some time to come. :\

I haven't had anything that bad for a while, but getting home after 14 or so hours of actual work time (as opposed to work + long drive, which is generally a bit easier) all week is kind of obnoxious, especially when it's for my salaried job where I just took a 20% pay cut.

How to use a wireless router as a bridge?

I have screens all over my apartment that are 16:9 or 16:10. The vast majority of them - TVs or computer screens - are 16:10, being slightly taller than the visibly rectangular 16:9. If I'm not getting an edge-to-edge picture when viewing 16:9 content (not 1.85:1), those extra pixels had to...

    Dell G2410 LCD 24" - any good?

If they support an on-screen resolution of 1920x1200, they're 16x10. When displaying 16:9 content, they have small black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, which both MY HDTVs do. Sir, you are wrong. Admit your mistake.
  44. Mercutio

    Dell G2410 LCD 24" - any good?

Nope, they aren't, if you go look at them. In fact, I can't think of a TV that's properly 16:9. They do 16:10 probably as a concession to 4:3 content. Plug in a PC and they're all 1920x1200. Notebook PCs and 17 and 19" computer displays are the most likely actual 16:9 screens.

    Dell G2410 LCD 24" - any good?
