    WTF is Hyper-V?

VMware just makes a virtual NIC on your existing PC and bridges it to the emulated one. I would be surprised if you couldn't do the same with Microsoft's version.

Vista How do I make it like XP?

The last Latitude I looked at, the physical switch to turn wireless on and off was broken, but I could turn it on and off in the BIOS. Given that your PC is an Inspiron, the antenna might just completely suck, or you may have been trying to use a form of encryption (WPA2, perhaps?) that your PC...

WD to launch 2TB drives, lose data

No, 2TB is not the maximum size for an NTFS volume under XP. It is the maximum size of a FAT32 drive, and many hardware RAID controllers don't support arrays larger than 2TB, but Windows itself can handle NTFS volumes much larger than that.

Vista How do I make it like XP?

You probably just need a newer install CD. SP2+ has drivers for most SATA drives on standard southbridge SATA controllers, unless the drive is in AHCI or RAID mode, in which case you'll have to slipstream an install disc to include the drivers or else load a textmode driver off a floppy.

The hacked versions of OSX run very well on lots of stuff. I'll probably switch my Acer notebook back to being OSX, if only so I have a machine to look at when I need to look at OSX. I don't really have a reason to have OSX other than to be able to support the handful of Mac users I know...

Proof: Your employees are potentially your worst assets

I believe there was a Dilbert cartoon about 10 years ago that suggested employees were the seventh most valuable assets for a company, right behind paper clips. Sounds about right.

    500 GB

Yes, that one. I'm carrying 250GB 5400rpm Samsung drives for miscellaneous storage (USB or in the second drive bay of my notebooks) right now, and they're both pretty full. I don't really want to buy a Seagate but I probably will buy a 500GB drive or two when the 250s are full.

... and by "Premium" you meant Ultimate, right? Because no Home Version of Windows has ever had downgrade rights. I can't say I've ever installed a retail copy of Vista Business, but I am shocked that it's not covered for downgrade. I didn't realize that.

    Windows 7

Windows 7 appears to default to doing a scheduled Defrag at 1:00AM on Wednesday, at least on the two machines I have here that are running it. I finally ran a notebook out of power under Windows 7. It just completely shut off. No warnings or attempts to hibernate beforehand. I was briefly...

The boards I bought have a SPDIF and a TOSLink connector, and I think the total per board worked out to $11 apiece including the international shipping. A home for old Software

The big problems with trying to get three years out of a used notebook: 1. Battery. A used notebook's battery will be basically shot. Seagate 7200.11 drives failing

If you're dealing with a Jmicron controller the problem isn't that the controller is on the secondary interface, it's that the Jmicron chip routes IDE connectivity through USB rather than directly to the southbridge as traditional IDE controllers do.
