DVD Hi-Def format war near end, Blu-ray wins?

I have a DAT player. I transferred everything I had on DAT (studio tapes from one of Chicago's classical stations) to CD. By the time I got a recorder, I also owned a CD burner. Most of the appeal for me was getting copies of stuff that was otherwise unobtainable. Regarding LaserDisc sound...

    Spyware App Updates

Spybot has always been useless until the first time you do updates. I think the default for the previous version was a database size that was about 5% of what the DB with updates was... Winsockfix has the Mercutio seal of approval for taking care of that lost connectivity. Also, Tannin... I...

eSATA: Now with one fewer cord

Latest news on the eSATA spec is that it'll offer power integrated in the existing data connector. While I don't see any mention that the connector will be compatible with existing products, I know I'd be glad to see it in either case.

    Which Boot Loader?

I thought this was common knowledge but... The order of operations for multibooting is to start with the least complex system and work to the most complex. If you're dealing with more than one version of Windows, you do the older before the newer, and you do your *nix last, because it's always...

    More Vista nonsense

I could believe that back in the days of Windows 98, but I'm seeing partitions marked as FAT12 (the filesystem used on floppy disks) and an "unknown" type that was up in the 60s someplace. I think it's a purposeful attempt to reduce interoperability.

I'm rather fond of the Logitech Trackman Optical myself. Actually Logitech generally seems like a winner; my labs with basic, $6 Logitech opticals haven't needed any replaced over the last four years.

You can, and that's what I've been doing, but 1. Why are they deviating from standard? and 2. It breaks some really common techie tools; if you don't know any better you just say "Oh, my tool doesn't work with Vista."

    Which Boot Loader?

Pretty much everything these days - SuSE, Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu - uses GRUB. Unfortunately, they all customize it a bit differently from the others, so if you ever have to repair it, you might be in for a couple minutes of poking around /boot or /grub looking for the config files.

    FairTax

I think we can draw a distinction between a moral society and a fair society. Morality is a confusing topic for a lot of religious people; a lot of them seem to assume that morality is something that can only be established from (their own) religion. It's not a word I would wish to drag into...

I have yet to find an Intel-based Apple notebook that doesn't get too hot on the bottom. They all do it. In fact, the only times I see Apple notebooks are when someone brings me one that's either overheating or has already killed itself. I don't care about the one button trackpad, but in...

That's why we have to keep trying until we get it right. I'd go further and say that members of a society with a functional government need to subjugate their individuality in order to more fully allow that government to create a just and fair society. And in the case of wealthy people, that...

They're all loud. I'm hearing from other instructors that our lab machines are occasionally crashing in Vista, and the only classes we're teaching at the moment are introductory (This is how to copy a file, this is how to turn down the volume). Mind you, this is on two month old hardware that's 100% vista...
