    ATi HD 3870 and 3850

I don't think either ATI or nVidia has a very good handle on how to keep their hardware properly cool. They need to be willing to specify much larger heat sinks and bigger, quieter fans; I'd be more than willing to pay for something like what's on an 8800GTX on any card I bought, even if that...

    More Vista nonsense

True story: A nice, matronly grandmotherly type lady brought me her notebook, an HP dv9000 that is about six months old and must've been the most expensive model in the Best Buy or whatever where she bought it. It has Vista Ultimate and Office 2007 Premium on it, and license stickers for both...

When I was younger, I worked in Coal and Nuclear power plants. I had to pass a background check. That was it. A background check. To work in a Nuclear Power plant.

    ATi HD 3870 and 3850

I might be willing to go along with that if the new GPU sat under the very nice but still vastly inadequate cooler used for the GTX/GTS. It doesn't. It's on a small cooler and I have little doubt that many people will lose their expensive cards because they continue to get too goddamned hot.

    ATi HD 3870 and 3850

I've had to RMA an 8800GTX twice in less than a year, and that meshes with my continued low expectations for nVidia graphics hardware. There's certainly no reason to think their designs have gotten any better.

Oddly enough my now-dead Gateway didn't have problems with waking up from Hibernate either. It dead, however, have problems with draining the battery in under a day while "hibernating." MS Mega-booster John Dvorak's latest column describes the current Vista product cycle as a "Death Watch."

I'm sorry, but you're living in a neocon fearmonger's dreamworld if you, as an ordinary citizen, are so worried about terrorists that you actually take the time to even have conversations about "them" and what "they" could do. Statistically, you're more likely to be the next guy to marry...

    Is Photoshop CS3 worth the add'l $

Recoding a DVD will cause all CPUs to redline on my C2Q. Otherwise, I have to be doing something ridiculous like playing City of Heroes (uses two cores) and running virus scans inside a pair of virtual machines.

I have four notebooks here with Vista on them: a Lenovo T61, an HP dv9000, a Latitude D531 and an Inspiron 6000. All of them seem to have issues with not waking up from hibernate. Most of them seem to wake up about half the time. I haven't seen the HP wake up properly at all. Does anyone have...

    Networking class suggestions please?

Not sure how I missed this but... For a motivated student with some experience of the topic, three months is a decent span of time for most studying and test prep. I think it's important to take the test inside a three to six month time frame, or you WILL put it off forever. There is value in...

Well, let's lay that myth to rest... They are THAT bad. Actually, If you're going nVidia to Intel or Intel to nVidia, or Sis to Intel or Intel to SiS, you'll probably be able to at least boot your system without a BSOD. Oddly enough, I've had more problems going nVidia to nVidia or anything to or from Via, than anything else.

I already have to deal with six Phaser solid ink printers. Unfortunately, that Samsung laser printer is no longer made and no model of equivalent features was made to replace it, and no, no human being on Earth would look at color laser output and compare it favorably to something with a 4 or 6 tank photo printer's. These are not my standards. My...

Budget is any amount of money that will result in three classrooms having functional, photo-capable Inkjet printers. I guess I could buy some kind of crappy print server if I had to. I have four printers right now - probably $600 worth of hardware and ink, all told, that are useless now because someone walked off with a power cable. They are all different from a standard power cable, and I can't think of a...

At the moment, I'd say the tide has shifted back to AMD: The motherboards are cheaper and have more nifty features, the CPUs are cheaper and more importantly they are faster at available price points than Intel's. For $160, one can buy an AMD x2/6000 or an E6550. If you aren't planning to...

Actual recommendations: GIGABYTE GA-P35C-DS3R - For $150, it doesn't do anything all that special, other than be a rock-solid motherboard for an Intel Processor. Intel 946GZis - $80. Suggest a decent 19" LCD monitor

I'd pay a great deal more money for a large LCD that was NOT super-high resolution. I spent 90 minutes today trying to make a crazy old lady happy with that Samsung 904 I wrote about. 120dpi, extra-large fonts at 800x600 (on a widescreen, naturally) was the only thing that made her stop bitching.
