    Windows 10

Has anyone found any kind of cause or even correlation for the "Critical Error: Cortana and Start Menu are not working" crap that seems to happen all the time on Windows 10 machines? My lab PCs don't seem to have a problem, but it's far and away the most common problem I see on Windows 10 machines.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I have a Plextor drive and I believe dd and LunarTunes have Samsung. I've observed both Samsung and Plextor to get hot in the same fashion. It's just something to look forward to next time you put together a PC.

    Best movie you've seen

I guess my cousin got to be an usher at the Oscars this year. He's done it before but it still amuses me. As far as the awards themselves, I thought The Martian was a far better movie than The Revenant and I wish Mad Max: Fury Road had won at least one of the major awards instead of just...

SSDs - State of the Product?

I stuck a heat sink on mine as well. At first I thought mine was just residually hot from proximity to my GPU, but after I read a bit about them I realized it's just one more thing to keep cool. Kind of surprise since mSATA drives really don't get hot at all.

To pull an SSD or not to pull an SSD

As I said, this is all low-use stuff, legacy systems (2 of the drives haven't written one full terabyte of data since they've been deployed, including swap space) that are still irregularly needed. Sometimes, we wind up with parts we don't particularly like because they're what is most readily...

    Windows 10

XP was the last version of Windows to use NTLDR and boot.ini. Contemporary versions of Windows use Boot Configuration Data with GUIDs to find bootable Windows installations. Editing BCD entries by hand is a PITA, but EasyBDC is just what it implies and will probably fix you right up.

To pull an SSD or not to pull an SSD

    1. No. 2. Looks like. And EVERYTHING says the drives are OK by SMART settings. It's only when I go look at details in the Samsung Software that I see a problem.

To pull an SSD or not to pull an SSD

Not really. This is production stuff. It's low-use/low volume, but I can't predict when it's being used, either. Right now it's more of an annoyance than a major problem, so I'd rather not put a bunch of billable hours (and the argument over getting them paid) in to dealing with it unless I'm...

Pine A64 platform, starting at 15$

The guys I teach these days are all about Fire Sticks for access to Kodi + Fusion Repo Pirate Streaming sites. That's trivial for a Pi but the Pi is also slower and more expensive (and doesn't have a remote) in comparison. I know you can do stuff like implement a 3D printer with one but you can...

question Where'd the X79 motherboards go?

Handy, you don't have access to a full-blown Vsphere setup for personal use? I know you switched jobs but for some reason that surprises me.

To pull an SSD or not to pull an SSD

Ordinarily, I'd pull drives at the first sign of problems but here's a case where my diagnostic tools don't agree and I can't create a reproducible issue. SSD drives have odd fail states and thus could just be something I don't recognize, which is why I'm third-guessing at this point.

I have a Hyper-V host with four Samsung 850 Pro drives in it, each home to a guest OS install and nothing else. question Where'd the X79 motherboards go?

Most recently with an LGA1150 board. As I recall, I tried Kingston and Crucial DDR3-1600 ECC UDIMMs and the damned thing wouldn't boot until I stuck in one particular Samsung module. Edit: This bastard.

question Where'd the X79 motherboards go?

I've been punished for not buying tested RAM for a Supermicro system in the past. You don't do that too many times before you just buy something on the HCL. question Where'd the X79 motherboards go?

There's something to be said for an unused board and you also have to remember that if you're buying a CPU of a certain age, it's going to cost a quarter what it did new and probably still have 80% of the per-core performance of current top-end stuff.

Consider that after the floods in 2011, these guys were going around to Sam's Club and Costco to buy up local stock so they could de-shell cheap external drives. That is genuinely cool. I'd actually really like to see some efforts to make old Windows software run emulated on mobile devices without having to jump through a lot of hoops. It's not like an eight-core ARM or low-end Atom doesn't have the resources to make that happen.
