I am going to step in and say something nice about AVG: You install it. It updates every day, on its own. It does a scan every day, on its own (which can be obnoxious on older PCs) It's vastly lighter in terms of system resources when compared to Norton/McAfee. You don't have to fuss around...

Several of my home PCs won't boot without a 700W PSU. I don't know why anyone needs 1kW, but it's not that hard to need 600W+ with a high end graphics card, modern CPU, 4GB RAM and a case full of disk drives. I'm actually not fond of the Seasonic 700W unit simply because the modular cables...

As I suspected, the 10th Anniversary Command and Conquer set is gobs and gobs of fun to have. Even the old school FMV sequences are awesome. Wish they would update more old games for modern PCs.

Yes. A 2GHz E6400 was faster than a 2.6GHz Opteron (whichever one it was) the day they were released. It's apples and oranges per clock cycle and it's not even close to competitive. The only thing that AMD has is moderately good performance at lower-than-Intel pricing right now.

A couple thoughts on C2Ds: 1. The T4300 (low-end chip) overclocks even better than an E6300 and costs about $30 less. And I have yet to meet a low-end C2D that won't hit 3GHz/core - stable - on the stock cooling. 2. There's minimal difference between an E6300 and an E6400 at stock speeds...

Here's another idea: Chuck the internal Mini-PCI modem and/or Wireless-B for a nice Intel miniPCI wireless G card. If your notebook already has the antennae it's a two minute upgrade. Draft N is not necessary. I am the only person on earth who uses A, apparently, but I do appreciate having it...

Almost everything I've built on AM2, I've used a GA-M61PM-S2 ("S2"). Gigabyte has "S3" and "S4" products but I haven't tried any yet. Its S3 Intel boards are very nice though.

Windows is HORRIBLE about copying files, particularly anything that is not trivial, either by virtual of large size or by virtue of number of files. What you are seeing is not unusual and it is completely pathetic and one of the reasons I <3 my Linux boxes.

Shouldn't be an issue since there's no change in hardware or files on the same. From Vista's standpoint it should be just like I shut it down and restarted it; I restored (as far as I know) the exact contents of the hard disk.

The copy of TrueImage I have does not work with Vista. So I booted my WinPE that has TrueImage installed and imaged my Vista install that way. I messed with it a bit, trying to install some other software that might not be compatible (it wasn't) then booted back to WinPE to restore my image...

It should work. I've done setups of three displays with three ATI 3d Rage cards (1 AGP, 2 PCI). Windows could handle that just fine.

Turns out, Vista's Firewall is completely retarded. I'm guessing this is partly because it overlaps with something OneCare does?

Hey, you got almost a week more than I did! Anyway, my RC2 key worked to install Vista on a retail disc install. I don't know whether that counts against my total activations or anything else, but I installed it on a test PC and it seems to be OK.

I really despise the GMail interface. I'm not terribly fond of Yahoo's either, but I don't have to use it very often since I don't use the webmail interface under normal circumstances. Anyway, I've seen the behavior in question. Generally, if I switch away to another tab for a minute or so...
