    Slow WoW updates

One of my students is a WoW player. She's on a 6Mbit cable connection to the internet and has a very nice PC (x2/3800, 2GB RAM, Gigabyte nForce4, x800 Pro). She emailed me to ask why her World of Warcraft updates take so long; her boyfriend's notebook (which is a Dell Inspiron of some kind...

    My new system

I had an xbox360 for a little while. I played the one game I wanted to play and then I sold it. I could not stand the controls on it. The reason I have the HDDVD drive made for Xbox is that it is substantially cheaper than a set-top HDDVD player.

It's not the same thing. Nero Digital is its own MPEG4 implementation. If you use the simple profile, anything that can play back "modern" Quicktime can play back Nero Digital as well. If you turn on the bi-directional encoding, you need a device or program/codec that is expressly compatible...

    AHA-39160 Drivers (windows)

That's a worrisome thing to just let lie. I guess one thing to do would be to disconnect the drives and use them one at a time on different channels, to see if the error persists on the same channel or moves with one or more of the drives. Or if the controller throws the error with no drives...

I like Mission style stuff myself. Never been to an Ikea, but I hear their stuff is particle board. I try not to be a super-picky audiophile. I really do. But I paid cash for a full set of Kef Reference-series speakers about three years ago. Those speakers cost a few thousand dollars more than my (newish) car. On the plus side, I'm in love with them and I don't regret the purchase. I also...

As a point of reference, I've used X1800s and X1900XTXs, and they are basically the same noise level as a 7900GS, which is the only new-ish discrete nVidia hardware I've had any contact with.

Motherboard/processor suggestions for new PC for my mom

Soyo has issues with being Soyo. Like Abit has issues with being Abit. The Gigabyte board is a GA-K7S748. It does not have an onboard NIC but it does have sound. I gave one to Clocker, once. They have an absurdly fast PATA implementation; they're completely vanilla but are wonderful hardware.
