AM2 - Let the Games Begin

In a training environment, you want people to be able to see around the monitor, Buck. :) Also, and I plan to continue to bitch about it until it gets better, where the hell are the 24" 4:3 monitors? Grrr.

AM2 - Let the Games Begin

Reimaging isn't a time-limited process. It takes four and a half minutes now, which I'm fairly certain is limited by the speed of the hard disks involved. I don't see a RAMdrive making that better.

    Bridging to a wireless NIC?

Yeah. O'Reilly and Associates has a book called "Wireless Hacks" that goes into some detail about a Linux-based PC router along those lines.

There's a shock. On the plus side, I've recently had people ask me about Linux/MySQL who I didn't think could spell SQL.

AM2 - Let the Games Begin

Realistically, there's no reason for any of those things. These machines will sit in a lab and be unused for probably 95% of their 3-year shelf life. They don't need graphics hardware beyond what's needed to run Vista.... which the 6100 is perfectly capable of doing. They don't need SCSI drives...

AM2 - Let the Games Begin

One of our training clients wants new computers. He set a budget of $1500 per PC. No monitor, just the PC. And a seperate budget for labor and support for three years. The sad thing is, I can't figure out how to spend more than slightly over half that amount. X2/4800 Antec NSK4400 Case 2GB...

    Guidelines for PC Upgrades

That was a reply to the suggestion that the gentleman seeking an upgrade could buy a high-end Celeron. Which he couldn't, 'cause his motherboard uses socket 423, which Intel hasn't used in ages. And you posted that while I was replying. :P I *do* believe that there are "just scrap the whole...

    Guidelines for PC Upgrades

Here's a fun idea. Just got off the phone with a guy who wants to upgrade his PC. I told him there's probably no point, he should just buy a new one. Nope, he wants an upgrade. He has a 1.4GHz P4. A six-year-old PC. It would need a new PSU (200W), a new motherboard, new RAM (his uses RIMMs)...

    3600+ X2 reviewed

The new X2/3800s I have don't seem to be able to handle 2.6GHz. 2.4GHz is reasonable for them, but I'm not 100% sure they're fully stable. If the 3600 can typically be overclocked to stable 2.6GHz, I'm going to feel stupid for wasting ~$25 on each of the 3800s I bought. Grrr.

I'd like to know how a baseline nvidia 6100 works with it, and I'd like to know if the Dual Core thing is just BS. A $60 x700 seems like it might be OK; those are roughly on par with the old 9700. I've got a group of 12 guys who are in a guild(?) who want these machines. Some of them have a...

It's a i945 chipset instead of an i965, which probably has some kind of ramifications for memory bandwidth or supported frequencies or something, but it still looks vanilla to me. In fact, it's a little less than vanilla. It's cream-flavor or something, since it doesn't have any IDE support...

Asus is having *serious* issues with different BIOS revisions and Core 2 Duo support. Preferred firewall for Windows?

I suggest sticking with the Windows XP firewall for XP users. No. The Envy is totally different from the xPlosion (which uses a C-Media chip). The Envy driver package includes some jack-sensing software that IIRC allows you to reassign which plug goes to which hardware function. Don't you have that installed?
